Hello little princess!!!! We are very happy to announce the confirmation that our little bundle of joy is indeed a GIRL. Yesterday we had our second trimester screening and we finally got to see our little girl again. I was relieved to also confirm that there is only one baby in there (by how much movement I feel I was sure there were at least 3) and that all is progressing just as it should. It is always a little surreal to see the ultrasound pictures on the screen. My heart fills with joy at every opportunity we get. She is growing well and just about to hit the 1 lb mark at any moment now. Her little heart was beating strong at 142 bpm.
Olá princesinha!! Estamos muito felizes em anunciar a confirmação de que nosso pequeno pacote de alegria é de fato uma garota. Ontem tivemos nossa consulta medica e finalmente conseguimos ver a nossa menininha novamente. Fiquei aliviada ao confirmar também que há apenas um bebê lá dentro (pelo tanto de movimento que eu sinto, eu tinha certeza de que havia pelo menos três), e que tudo está progredindo como deveria. É sempre um pouco surreal ver as imagens de ultra-som na tela. Meu coração se enche de alegria em todas as oportunidades que temos. Ela está crescendo bem e ao ponto de alcancar 500 gramas a qualquer momento. Seu pequeno coração estava batendo forte a 142 bpm.
I have been feeling little pains here and there but otherwise I am doing great. My back feels extra painful at the end of super busy days but it helps when I can take breaks between activities. It has become slightly more difficult to carry Zuri in my arms, and when I do, he has to sit on top of the growing belly. That makes it a little bit umconfortable but, not impossible yet. I am sure glad he can walk now!
Apesar de sentir pequenas dores aqui e ali, estou me sentindo muito bem. Minhas costas ficam mais dolorosas no final de um dia corrido, mas ajuda quando eu posso descansar entre as atividades. Agora e um pouco mais difícil de carregar Zuri em meus braços, e quando eu carrego, ele tem que sentar em cima da barriga. Fica um pouco discomfortavel mas, não impossível ainda. Estou mito feliz que ele pode andar agora!
Talking about Zuri, other than being very interested in pushing my belly button back in, now he points to the belly when we ask him where the baby is. He also likes to kiss my belly a lot. Probably because he likes to follow daddy's example.
Falando sobre Zuri, além de ser muito interessado em empurrar meu umbigo de volta, agora ele aponta para a barriga quando perguntamos a ele onde o bebê está. Ele também gosta muito de beijar minha barriga. Provavelmente porque ele gosta de seguir o exemplo do pai.

Over the last few days my appetite has gained full force and I think I need to start controlling my cravings a little better. If what I crave is any indication of this little lady's future desires, she is definitely going to have a very sweet tooth. Nos últimos dias o meu apetite ganhou força total e eu acho que eu preciso começar a controlar os meus desejos um pouco melhor. Se o que eu almejo é qualquer indicação dos futuros desejos desta senhorita, ela é definitivamente vai ser chegada a doce. Ja está ficando muito tarde, então eu vou terminar este post por aqui... desclpe-me pelo fim repentino, mas escreverei mais em breve...
Time continues to fly by and yesterday our little man turned 13 months. I say "little" man but he is quite a big boy for his age weighing 24 lb and measuring almost 32 in--these were measurements from the last doctor's appointment this week. His height places him close to the mid 90th percentile for his age group. He is quite a little charmer too. He loves to hug and kiss mommy and daddy and really enjoys being read to. In fact, one of his favorite activities is when we go into his room and sit on the rocking chair and let him pick books from the drawer for us to read and look through together. He climbs on our lap and snuggles for the first few pages and then tries to flip the pages himself until it ends, and he is off to get another book. We can go on like this for a good 40 minutes. Since he likes books so much, we just registered him for the local library summer reading program for his age, but I will dedicate a whole post to that in the near future. He is getting a few new teeth, his molars. There is one peaking through the gums and I think the one on the other side is not too far behind. the teething affects his sleep a little bit (shorter naps) and makes him a little cranky but other than that he is doing great. There is a lot of babbling going on but very few actual words...although, I can tell he is trying hard. He can carry full conversations looking at us like it is obvious what he is saying... we nod and say something back. He is learning signs (baby sign language) much faster now and many times I notice him trying to make up his own...although I am not sure what they are for yet. The signs we just recently added are book, bird, fan, up (as in pick me up), and poop. His schedule is very regular now, which makes me a very happy mommy... it just helps so much when I can actually plan and get things done (one way you can tell is by the recent improvement in the frequency of posts published over the last few weeks). However, we are about to enter a very busy time in our summer with summer camp, VBS, family retreat, and, our much waited for, family vacation ahead...lets see how the regular schedule holds up. I don't want to make this post too long, I just meant it to a quick update post so I will end here... God bless!!
O tempo continua a voar e ontem o nosso homenzinho completou 13 meses. Eu digo homenzinho, mas pequenininho ele nao e nao. Ele é menino grande para sua idade pesando quase 11 kg e medindo mais de 80 cm - estas foram as medidas da última consulta médica esta semana. Ele gosta de abraçar e beijar a mamãe e o papai e realmente gosta de abrir os livros e ouvir as historinhas. Na verdade, uma de suas atividades favoritas é quando vamos para o seu quarto, sentamos na cadeira de balanço e deixámos ele escolher livros para lermos juntos. Ele sobe no nosso colo e fica quietinho durante as primeiras páginas e, em seguida, tenta passar as páginas se até ao fim, e ele desce para ir atras de outro livro. Assim ficamos por uns bons 40 minutos. Como ele gosta de livros, nos o registramos em um programa de leitura de verão da biblioteca local apropriado para a sua idade, mas vou dedicar um post inteiro para isso em um futuro próximo. Ele está recebendo alguns novos dentes, seus molares. Um da pra ver a pontinha saindo da gengiva e eu acho que o que está no outro lado não está muito atrás. Acho que o dentinhos estao afetando o sono dele um pouco (cochilos mais curtos) mas fora isso ele está indo muito bem. Ele esta falando um bocado, mas muito poucas palavras de verdade... embora, esteja claro que ele está se esforçando. Ele tem varias conversas olhando para nós como se fosse óbvio o que ele está dizendo... agente balança a cabeça e responde. Ele está aprendendo sinais (linguagem de sinais do bebê) muito mais rápido agora e muitas vezes eu noto que ele esta tentando inventar os seus próprios... embora eu não sei ainda o que eles querem dizer. Os sinais que adicionamos recentemente foram livro, pássaro, ventilador, me pega, e cocô. Sua rotina é bem mais regular agora, o que me faz uma mamãe muito feliz... ajuda muito quando eu consigo planejar e fazer as coisas. No entanto, estamos prestes a entrar em uma epoca de bastante atividades em nosso verão, com acampamento de verão, escola crista de ferias, retiro familiar, e nossa muito esperada, férias de família... Veremos se a rotina vai durar. Como eu so queria fazer uma rápida atualização vou terminar por aqui... Deus abençoe!
Being just a few days away from Zuri turning 13 months I thought it was about time I wrote about our progress with baby sign language. But let me start from the beginning...
I started researching baby sign language early in our pregnancy. I was just mesmerized by these little babies being able to communicate their basic needs to their parents through signing. I read about the developmental benefits and improved bonding experience between parent and child and I couldn't think of a reason not to try it.
Sometime after Zuriel was born I came across the Baby Sign Language website. I really enjoyed the easy-to-follow start up guide and especially loved the dictionary. They not only provide illustrations of each sign they have videos as well. Their website has been my main resource in this journey.
Faltando apenas alguns dias para o Zuri completar 1 ano e 1 mes eu penso que e hora de escrever sobre o nosso progresso com a linguagem de sinais para bebês. Mas deixe-me começar do começo... Comecei a pesquisar sobre a linguagem de sinais para bebês no início da nossa gravidez. Eu fiquei fascinada com esses bebêzinhos capazes de comunicar as suas necessidades básicas a seus pais através de linguagem de sinais. Eu li sobre os benefícios ao desenvolvimento mental, a melhora da experiência de ligação entre pai e filho e eu não conseguia pensar em uma razão para não tentar.
Algum tempo depois qe Zuriel nasceu me deparei com esse website http://www.babysignlanguage.com/. Eu realmente gostei de direcoes para iniciantes faceis de seguir e especialmente amei o dicionário. Eles não apenas fornecem ilustrações de cada sinal mas têm vídeos também. Este site tem sidoo meu recurso principal nesta jornada.
The first decision I had to make was when to start. I had read about many different people's experiences and everyone seemed to have a different opinion about that. There was somewhat of a consensus though, that the later you start the less likely you are to get discouraged. This idea probably comes from the fact that the younger the baby the longer he/she will take to start signing back. When Zuri was about 10 weeks, I had the opportunity of talking to a friend of mine who had successfully taught her little girl sign language and she encouraged me to start as early as 3 months. It took some thinking but I realized that I had nothing to loose. I was going to be saying those words anyway and it was going to take minimal effort to sign the words as i said it. So, when Zuri turned 3 months, hubby and I picked 5 signs (milk, mom, dad, more, and dog) and started signing away.
A primeira decisão que tive que fazer foi quando começar. Eu tinha lido sobre as experiências de varias pessoas e todos pareciam ter uma opinião diferente sobre o assunto. Houve um consenso, porém, que quanto mais tarde você começar menor a probabiblidade de desanimar. Essa idéia provavelmente vem do fato de que quanto menor o bebê mais tempo ele /ela vai demorar para começar a repetir os sinais. Quando Zuri estava com cerca de 10 semanas, eu tive a oportunidade de conversar com uma amiga minha que tinha ensinado com sucesso linguagem de sinais para sua filhinha, e ela me incentivou a começar tão cedo quanto três meses. Passei algum tempo pensando e analizando o assunto, foi quando eu percebi que eu não tinha nada a perder. Eu ia estar dizendo essas palavras de qualquer jeito e seria o mínimo de esforço para fazer os sinais das palavras junto. Assim, quando Zuri completou 3 meses, eu e o Marlon escolhemos cinco sinais (leite, mãe, pai, mais, e cachorro) e começamos a ensinar.
I should also mention that since we are a bilingual household and we are tying to stick to our native language (Portuguese) at home. So, we have been signing the English signs but repeating the Portuguese words. From the 5 original words we started with one was almost automatically dropped from the list right from the beginning..."Dog".. Since we don't have a dog we rarely ever used it so we just stopped. "Mom" and "Dad" we still sign once in a while but he never really picked those up. Maybe he would if we went back to signing them consistently now (we probably should!). On the other hand "milk" and "more" he picked up really fast. One thing I learned about my little guy is that if it is related to food he will get it very quick =D. He was a little over 6 months when he started signing the word "milk" back to us (see video above). At first, it didn't seem like he understood exactly what he was doing but by 8 months, it was very clear he got it.
Como nós somos uma família bilíngue, estamos fazendo o maximo possivel para falar a nossa língua nativa (Português) em casa. Então, temos feito os sinais relacionados as palavras em inglês, mas repetindo as palavras em portugues. Das cinco palavras originais com as quais começamos, um foi automaticamente removida da lista desde o início ... cachorro .. Uma vez que não temos um cachorro e raramente usavamos a palavra acabamos deixando de lado. Mamãe e papai ainda fazemos de vez em quando, mas ele raramente usa estes. Talvez se nos voltassemos a repetir estes sinais mais consistentemente agora (que provavelmente deveriamos) ele comecaria a usa-las mais. Por outro lado, "leite" e "mais" ele pegou bem rápido. Uma coisa que eu aprendi sobre o meu rapazinho é que, se a coisa está relacionada a comida ele vai aprender rápidinho =D. Ele estava com pouco mais de 6 meses, quando ele começou a fazer o sinal de "leite" (veja o video acima). No comeco, não parecia que ele estava entendendo exatamente o que ele estava fazendo, mas por volta de 8 meses, ficou muito claro que ele sabia.
Today, at almost 13 months he can also sign eat, water, bread, and pray. We introduce the sign for "eat" as soon as we introduced solids. The sign for bread came when we noticed he liked that a lot so we started signing it. I should note that the way he signs bread and water is not exactly the "book version" of it but his own adapted version. The sign for water involves holding up 3 fingers (the W sign) in front of the mouth...since he hasn't figured out how to hold just the 3 fingers he uses his whole hand to do it as well as trying to speak the word at the same time. Now the sign for bread also has some more advanced coordinated movements which he has adapted (see video above). To me it really doesn't matter how the sign comes out... I know he is having fun communicating and he is so happy we can understand him.
Hoje, com quase 13 meses, ele também sabe fazer os sinais para comer, água, pão e orar. Nós introduzimos o sinal para "comer" assim que nós introduzimos as papinhas. O sinal para "pão" veio quando percebemos que ele gostava muito de pao, então começamos a repetir o sinal. A maneira como ele faz o sinais para "pão" e "água" não é exatamente a "versão do livro," mas ele adaptou a sua própria versão. O sinal para "água" involve colocar três dedos (o sinal W) na frente da boca ... como que ele não descobriu como colocar apenas os três dedos ele usa toda a sua mão para fazê-lo, e tenta falar a palavra ao mesmo tempo. Agora, o sinal para "pão" também requer alguns movimentos coordenados mais avançados que ele adaptou (veja o vídeo acima). Eu realmente nao me importo de como ele faz o sinal ... Eu sei que ele está se divertindo comunicando conosco e ele fica radiante quando sabe que consiguimos ente-lo.
I intend to continue teaching him, new signs especially now that he is picking them up so fast. I am also excited to have enrolled in a free online baby sign language class today. This journey has been a lot of fun and very rewarding. I love how Zuri beams with delight when he knows he was understood. I am happy we have done it!
Tenho a intenção de continuar ensiando ao Zuri novos sinais, especialmente agora que ele esta pegando tão rápido. Também estou feliz porque ter me matriculado em uma aula grátis de línguagem de sinais para bebês hoje. Esta jornada tem sido muito divertida e gratificante. Eu amo ver o Zuri feliz da vida porque sabe que foi entendido. Estou muito feliz que embarcamos nesta jornada!
Oh yes we have reached the half-way point! I cannot believe how fast these first 20 weeks have gone by and how excited I am for the 20 weeks to come. This little girl is surely a ball of energy and a strong little kicker. I cannot wait to see what she is going to do in a few more weeks when she starts to run out of room in there. So you can have an idea, as I sit quietly here to write this blog she has been moving non-stop for a good while. Our next doctor's appointment is going to be next week and we will finally have the opportunity to see our little lady again. I can hardly wait.
Oh sim chegamos na metade do caminho! Eu mal posso acreditar na rapidez com que essas primeiras 20 semanas se passaram e o meu entusiasmo para as proximas 20 semanas. Certamente, essa menina tem energia de sobra e vai ser boa no futebol. Eu mal posso esperar para ver o que ela vai fazer em algumas semanas quando ela começar a ficar sem espaço aqui dentro. Pra você poder ter uma idéia, enquanto eu estou tranquilamente sentada aqui escrevendo este blog, ela tem se movido sem parar por um bom tempo. Nossa próxima consulta com o médico vai ser na próxima semana e finalmente teremos a oportunidade de ver a nossa pequena novamente. Mal posso esperar!
Last week, Marlon and I finally reached a final decision on a name and, before anyone starts wondering, no we are NOT announcing it until she has heard it first. It was harder than I imagined it would be to choose a name this time around. We had a girl's name picked out from the last time but once we actually found out we were having a girl we were not so sure about our previous selection. So, for the last few weeks we had been earnestly searching and now we have chosen. Don't worry, as soon as our princess arrives, you will surely know it too!
Na semana passada, Marlon e eu finalmente chegamos a uma decisão final sobre o nome e, antes que alguém comece a perguntar, não, nós não iremos anunciar ate que ela o escute primeiro. Foi mais difícil do que eu imaginava que seria escolher um nome dessa vez. Na verdade, nós ja tínhamos um nome de menina escolhido desde a última vez mas quando descobrimos que estávamos realmente esperando uma menina, não estávamos tão seguros sobre a nossa escolha anterior. Assim, nas últimas semanas estivemos à procura do nome perfeito para nossa pequena e agora acho que finalmente chegamos a decisao final. Não se preocupe, assim que a nossa princesa chegar, voce vai saber tambem!
Lately, my belly button has been sticking out more than ever which makes Zuri extremely curious about it. He is always trying to point at it and push it back in. Marlon and I have been telling him that there is a baby in there and showing him how to be gentle. So, his most recent reaction to all this is to kiss my belly. He is such a sweet little guy!
Ultimamente, meu umbigo tem aparecido mais do que nunca, o que faz aumentar a criosidade do Zuri. Ele está sempre tentando apontar para ele e empurrá-lo de volta para dentro. Marlon e eu temos dito a ele que há um bebê lá dentro (da barriga), e mostrado como ser gentil. Assim, sua reação mais recente para com tudo isso é beijar minha barriga repetidamente.
In the meantime I have been trying to come up with ideas for the nursery (I am still not sure if I want to do something like last time...or just skip the painting all together...It is so hard to leave it behind after we move) and working on different craft projects which I will blog about as soon as I am finished. I guess I will be ending here for today and I am looking forward to writing all the exciting new developments plus ultrasound pics of our princess next week.
Nesse meio tempo eu tenho tentando juntar ideias para o quarto deles (eu ainda não tenho certeza se eu quero fazer algo como da última vez, ou simplesmente deixar a pintura... É tão difícil deixar tudo para tras quando nos mudamos) e trabalhando em diferentes projetos de artesanato. Acho que vou terminar aqui por hoje mas eu estou ansiosa para escrever as novidades do ultra-som e fotos da nossa princesa na próxima semana.
I wish I could say I am an early riser but i can't. I am definitely a night owl. My husband is always telling me that it is all a matter of adapting but I haven't woken up past 7 am for more than a year now and I still have not "adapted." Zuri, on the other hand, can't sleep past 6:30 am. In fact, most days he is up and ready to go by 6. I really can't complain since he does go to bed everyday by 8 pm and does not wake up in between. Actually, in light of the months past, I am very grateful for the amount of sleep I get every night and for my husband's awesome help in the mornings. I know that the idea most people have is put him to bed later and he will wake up later, but that statement has proven itself false in our house. The later he goes to bed the lower the quality of his sleep and the EARLIER he wakes up. Not to mention the crankiness the next morning...
Eu gostaria de poder dizer que eu gosto de madrugar, mas eu não posso. Eu sou definitivamente uma coruja da noite. Meu marido está sempre dizendo que é tudo uma questão de costume mas ja faz mais de um ano que eu acordo antes das 7:00 e eu ainda não me acostumei. Zuri, por outro lado, não consigue dormir depois das 6:30. Na verdade, a maioria dos dias ele está acordado e pronto pro dia por volta das 6. Eu realmente não posso reclamar pois ele vai dormir por volta das 20:00 e ele não acorda no meio da noite. Na verdade, em visao desses últimos meses, estou muito grata pelas horas de sono que eu durmo todas as noites e pela incrível ajuda do meu marido no período da manhã. Eu sei que a idéia seria de colocá-lo para dormir mais tarde pra ele acordar mais tarde... Mas a essa afirmação provou falsa em nossa casa. Quanto mais tarde ele vai para a cama mais baixa a qualidade e o mais curto o tempo de sono. Sem mencionar o mau humor na manhã seguinte ...
Our morning routine starts pretty much the same everyday...the boy is HUNGRY!!! From the moment we enter the room to pick him up he makes sure to sign everything related to food he knows...milk, eat, more, bread, water....and any attempt to distract him at that point is futile. We used to try to wait until closer to 7 am to feed him breakfast but we have recently weaned him from his early morning feeding (of breast milk) so now we get his food ready as soon as he wakes up. He usually eats a full plate (by that I mean adult size) of mashed banana and papaya with a slice of whole wheat bread and pieces and sips of whatever we are having. While he eats, he likes to repeat the hand motions for the Bible action songs we sing for family worship to try to get us to sing for him...and we do. Then, it is play time.
Nossa rotina matinal começa praticamente do mesmo jeito todos os dias ... o menino está com FOME! A partir do momento que entramos no quarto para buscá-lo ele faz questao de usar todos os sinais que ele sabe que estao relacionados a comida... leite, comer, mais, pão, água .... e qualquer tentativa de distraí-lo nesse momento é inútil. Costumávamos tentar esperar até mais perto de 7 para alimentá-lo mas recentemente parei de amamenta-lo nesse horario e agora preparamos o desjejum logo que ele acorda. Normalmente, ele come um prato cheio de banana e mamão amassados com aveia e uma fatia de pão integral e pedaçinhos das coisas que nos estamos comendo. Enquanto ele come ele gosta de repetir os gestos das musiquinhas que cantamos pra ele na hora do culto familiar pra agente cantar pra ele...e agente canta (Cristo fez os peixes, as arvores balancam, se vc esta contente...) E depois do desejum, é hora de brincar.
Sometimes we take him for strolls around the neighborhood, sometimes we play outside with chalk (see a couple of posts back), sometimes we read to him the books that he likes (mainly 4: The toddler Bible, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Eight Silly Monkeys, and Brown Bear Brown Bear) over and over and over again, at his request, and a lot of times we sit and play with him with his toys on the living room floor. last week, however, we decided to take him to the playground at the city park nearby.
Às vezes, o levamos para passeios no carrinho ao redor do bairro, às vezes brincamos com giz, às vezes lemos para ele os livros que ele gosta (principalmente 4: A Biblia para bebes, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Eight Silly Monkeys, e Brown Bear Brown Bear), vez apos vez apos vez, a seu pedido, e varias vezes, sentamos e brincamos com ele, com seus brinquedos no chão da sala. Semana passada, no entanto, decidimos levá-lo para o no parquinho que fica aqui perto.
Spending time outside at this time of the year in South Texas is tricky business. The weather forecast last week alone does not leave the 90's an this week we are reaching the 100's. Turns out it is a great thing that Zuri is up early because we can spend sometime outdoors before the sun becomes too hot (also before daddy has to leave for the day).
Passar tempo do lado de fora nesta época do ano no sul do Texas é um negócio complicado. A previsão do tempo da semana passada por si só não desceu abaixo de 32 graus centigrados. Entao, ainda bem que o Zuri acorda cedo porque assim podemos passar tempo ao ar livre antes de o sol se torna muito quente (também antes de papai tem que sair para trabalhar).
It is also easier to be outside now that he can walk. He was able to enjoy the playground a lot more this time around. I am very glad that the park has a toddler playground where the structures are lower and more accessible to him. He truly had a blast and could not contain his excitement at times. One of his favorite things to do was put the wood-chips through the holes on the playground "floor." He also went down the slides quite a few times although he is still trying to figure out exactly how to do it.
E bem mais fácil sair agora que o Zuri sabe andar. Ele pode desfrutar do parquinho muito mais desta vez. Estou muito feliz que o parque tem um parquinho mais baixo que e mais acessivel para criancas da idade dele. Ele aproveitou bastante e mal pode conter seu entusiamo. Uma das coisas que ele mais gostou de fazer foi colocar os pedacinhos de madeira do chao nos furinhos do parquinho. Ele tambem desceu no escorregador varias vezes apesar de ainda estar tentando descobrir como melhor faze-lo.

Love, I knew you would be a great husband soon after I met you. Your gentlemanly ways captured my heart from day 1. After all, how many other fifteen year-old boys out there cared enough to politely hold doors open for their mother and sister or carry their heavy loads even if it meant carrying their girly purse around all day? Not many! Seriously, you had me at "hello!" Over the last several years my hopes and expectations of what marriage could be were met and surpassed by you. I have yet to meet a more godly, caring, and self-sacrificing man. You are the head of our family and I have no doubt that, if there was ever a need, you would willing and gladly give up your life for me, for Zuri, or even for our unborn daughter. I just know you love us that much!
When it came to fatherhood, you were no different. To be sincere, before Zuri was born, I wasn't sure how you were going tackle this new task. Here you were, a grown married man, who had never even held a baby before in your life. However, over the last year, you taught me that past "baby holding experience" is no pre-requisite to being an awesome father.
Zuri just turned one about 3 weeks ago and he can't vocalize his thoughts and feelings yet but if he could I am sure that today he would tell you again how much he loves you. You may ask me how I know that, and I will tell you how...I can see it.
I can see it in the way he jumps up and runs to the door everytime he hears (or thinks he hears) the garage door opening because he knows it is you who has arrived.
I can see it in the way he carries your shoes and socks all around the house to hand them to you wherever you are.
I can see it in his eyes when he accomplishes something he thinks important (i.e. putting the lid on the Tupperware container he is playing with or when he was finally able to balance one foam block on top of another) and he looks at you to make sure you saw it.
I can see it in his happy and excited expressions when you walk through his bedroom door early every morning and, despite whatever little sleep you may have had, you cheerfully greet him good morning.
I can see it in the way he looks at the door every time I mention the word "papai", as if he was hoping he would hear the garage door at that moment.
I can see it in the way he copies everything you do even when you are not home, from the way you work out to the way you so lovingly kiss me on the cheek.
I can see it in the way he loves wearing your hats and tries so hard to put on your flip flops and shoes.
The boy loves you! I know he can't say it yet but I will. YOU ARE A GREAT FATHER!
I knew you became excited about being a daddy as soon as we found out we were expecting and you had already started a fatherhood board on Pinterest. You cherished every kick and punch you could feel and repeatedly mentioned that you wished you could carry the baby too.
Zuri knew the comfort of your arms before he knew mine. He heard your calming and soothing voice before he ever met me. I deeply admire your never-ending patience and gentle touch. And that was just the beginning...
So today, for Z and our unborn princess, I want to wish you a very happy father's day! We are incredibly blessed to have you!

Last Monday we started our first week of summer swimming lessons. The city where we live has this great aquatics summer program that offers many different classes for children starting at 6 months of age and we are very excited to be able to participate.
Segunda-feira passada começamos a nossa primeira semana de aulas de natação de verão. A cidade onde vivemos oferece um excelente programa de esportes aquáticos de verão com varias classes diferentes para crianças a partir de 6 meses de idade. Nos estamos muito entusiasmados em poder participar.
We are enrolled in a parent/baby class for children ages 6-47 mo. It is a very wide range but it is mainly a "get used to the water" class. Our class meets every afternoon Monday-Friday for about 30 minutes of water fun. Getting to and from the classes has not been easy with one car and Marlon's busy schedule (we have an evangelistic series going on also) but we were very happy that he was able to make it to one of the classes with us yesterday.
Estamos matriculados em uma classe de pais/bebê para crianças de 6-47 meses. E uma faixa etaria bem ampla mas o principal objetivo da classe e que as criancas se acostumem com a água. Nossa classe se reúne todas as tardes de segunda a sexta-feira por cerca de 30 minutos para diversão na água. Ir e vir das classes não tem sido fácil com um carro so e a agenda lotada de Marlon (Temos uma série evangelística acontecendo também) mas ficamos muito felizes que ele pode participar de uma das classes com a gente ontem.
The class is pretty simple. We splash, blow bubbles, float, kick, sing songs, practice how to get into the pool, and sometimes play with toys. The water is nice and warm and the sun is hot and bright, even at 5:30 pm. We try to do as much of the activities as Zuri will do. The first day he was enjoying himself and trying to blow bubbles until he sucked in some water instead of blowing... after that he has been a little bit shy in the water. He still enjoys it, just hasn't really tried to blow bubbles after that =(
A classe é muito simples. Nós batemos os bracos na agua, fazemos bolhinhas, flutuamos, batemos as pernas, cantamos, praticamos como entrar na piscina, e às vezes brincamos com os brinquedos. A água é agradável e quente, o sol é quente e forte, mesmo em 5:30 da tarde. Nós tentamos fazer o máximo de atividades que Zuri se disponha a fazer. No primeiro dia, ele estava se divertindo e tentando soprar bolhinhas até que ele bebeu um pouco de água em vez de soprar... Depois disso, tem sido um pouco tímido na água. Ele ainda gosta e aproveita, mas nao tentou mais soprar bolhanhas depois disso =(.
There are quite a few other kids in our class, I think we might be a total of 20. We are very happy that one of our little friends A.F. and her parents are also in the same class. The kids don't do much interacting with each other during the class but I am glad that Zuri gets to spend time with other children around his age.
Há varias outras crianças na nossa turma, eu acho chega a um total de 20. Estamos muito felizes de que uma das nossas amiguinhas A.F. e seus pais também estão na mesma classe. As crianças não passam muito tempo interagindo uns com os outros durante a aula mas eu estou contente que o Zuri pode passar tempo com outras crianças ao redor de sua idade.
When I first saw the schedule I thought 30 min was a short time but turns out it is just right. By the time we come home we are ready for dinner, bath, and bed time. I love the pool so I am definitely enjoying it a lot myself! The purpose of joining this class is for Zuri to be comfortable around water, learn some basic skills, and water safety, but most of all, I want him to have fun, see new people (and more of old friends), and enjoy family time.
Quando eu vi o horario pela primeira vez pensei que 30 minutos fosse pouco tempo, mas na verdade e o tempo ideal. Quando chegamos em casa, estamos prontos para o jantar, tomar banho, e dormir. Como eu amo a piscina, estou definitivamente gostando muito da nossa nova atividade! O objetivo de participarmos desta classe é que o Zuri se sinta confortável com a água e aprenda algumas habilidades básicas e de segurança, mas acima de tudo, queremos que ele se diverta, veja pessoas novas, e que passemos horas agradeveis de lazer em familia.
As I was coming out of target a few days ago I quickly glanced through the dollar section for "treasures" and found a set of colorful crayola sidewalk chalk. So far, Zuri doesn't seem to be too much into crayons or pencils, he uses them to bang on the table and make noise as much as anything, so I wasn't sure how he was going to like these. Turns out I hit the jackpot! He absolutely loved them!!!!
Quando eu estava saindo da loja "Target" alguns dias atrás eu dei uma olhada rapida pela seção de $1 para ver se achava algum "tesouro" e encontrei um caixa de giz colorido da crayola. Até agora, Zuri não parece se interessar muito por giz de cera ou lápis de cor. Na maioria das vezes, ele usa esses materiais para bater na mesa e fazer barulho. Então, eu não fazia a minima ideia de qal seria a reacao dele com o giz. Dessa vez eu acertei em cheio! Ele simplesmente amou!
After our early morning walk a few days ago, I got the pack of chalk and decided we were going to give it a try. I placed some foam boards on the cement in front of the garage, sat down, and started coloring with him. The boy loved it! He wanted to try all the colors on the different surfaces (the cement, the foam boards, his clothes, my clothes...) I think he was also excited about being able to walk barefoot outside on the cement and grass. These pictures are actually from our second adventure with the chalk. This time it was daddy who was there with him in the morning after their walk.
Depois da nossa caminhada matutina alguns dias atrás, eu peguei o pacote de giz e decidi experimentá-los. Coloquei algumas placas de espuma no cimento em frente à garagem, sentei e começei a colorir com ele. O menino adorou! Ele queria experimentar todas as cores em diferentes superfícies (o cimento, as placas de espuma, a roupa dele, minha roupa...) Eu acho que ele tambem estava empolgado com o fato de que ele estava andando descalço do lado de fora, no cimento e grama. Na verdade, essas fotos são de nossa segunda aventura com o giz. Desta vez, foi papai que estava lá com ele de manhã após caminhada.
We played for a good 40 minutes and both times when we told him it was time to go inside he cried. It was sad to have to bring him in since he was having so much fun but the sun was getting hotter (yes too hot at 8:45 am...it is summer in the Valley) and it was almost time for his nap. I am glad we found something that he really enjoys. I am looking forward to many sidewalk chalk adventures!
Nos brincamos por uns 40 minutos e a mbas as vezes quando lhe dissemos que era hora de entrar, ele chorou. Foi triste ter que entrar já que ele estava se divertindo tanto, mas o sol estava ficando mais quente (sim, muito quente as 8:45 ... é verão no Vale) e ja estava quase na hora do seu cochilo. Fico feliz que encontramos algo que ele realmente gosta. Estou ansiosa por muitas aventuras riscando a calçada de giz!
Oh yess we are counting!!!! I know it may not look like it from my lack of posting about our new little one but we definitely are! Truth is the past few weeks were very very busy with birthday preparations and family visits...I have lots of posts to catch up on but that will have to come later. Today I am here to talk about our little princess.

A verdade é que nos últimos dias estivemos muito, muito atarefados com os preparativos de aniversário do Zuri e a visita de nossos familiares ... Eu tenho muitos posts para por em dia, mas estes terao de vir mais tarde. Hoje estou aqui para falar sobre a nossa pequena princesa.
The last time that I wrote about the pregnancy we were about to find out the baby's gender. This was a very exciting event! A good friend of ours (Jene Mac) got the results of the test and prepared a beautiful gender reveal party. It was awesome! It was so fun to find out our baby's gender together with our friends. A última vez que escrevi sobre a gravidez estávamos prestes a descobrir o sexo do bebê. Este foi um evento muito emocionante! Uma amiga nossa (Jene Mac) pegou os resultados do teste e preparou uma linda festa para revelar a grande noticia. Foi incrível! We are so very excited to be expecting a little girl!!!!! I guess I am still a little shocked by the news too. I know I would be happy regardless but it just feels too good to be true to have it happen exactly as I dreamed it would.
Estamos muito entusiasmados por estar esperando uma menininha! Acho que ainda estou um pouco chocada com a notícia também. Eu sei que eu ficaria feliz independentemente do resultado, mas parece bom de mais pra ser verdade o fato de tudo estar acontecendo exatamente como eu sonhei que seria.

Now back to the present...I am glad to say that my energy levels have returned and my food aversions have, thankfully, gone away. I still crave some Taco Bell bean burritos once in a while, and other people's cooking is still more appealing than anything I make but we are back to gaining weight. I guess my appetite took a turn for the better when my parents and mother-in-law were here for Zuri's birthday and I had plenty of my secrete cravings for "home" food satisfied, as well as my sweet tooth.
Agora, de volta para o presente ... Eu estou contente de dizer que minha energia esta de volta ao normal e as minhas aversões a certos alimentos, felizmente, desapareceram. Eu ainda sinto "desejos" de comer alguns "burritos de feijão" (comida mexicana) de vez em quando, e a culinária de outras pessoas ainda é mais atraente do que qualquer coisa que eu faça mas, estamos de volta a ganhar peso. Acho que o meu apetite deu uma guinada para melhor quando os meus pais e minha sogra estiveram aqui para o aniversário de Zuri e eu tive muito dos meus "desejos" secretos de comida "de casa" satisfeitos.
Growth-wise she should be about the length of a bell pepper by now (according to one of the pregnancy apps I have on my phone) and weigh around 7 ounces. Last week we had a regular doctors appointment and heard her little heart, which was a lot easier to find this time than the previous two, and all was declared well. She, like her brother, is quite a little mover. I started to feel her flutters at 15 weeks but i didn't take long for flutters to become kicks and punches. Marlon was able to feel her at 16 weeks and a couple of days ago I could actually SEE her kicking (or punching, or pushing...or whatever it is she was doing). I had to remind myself we are only 18 weeks along. Looks like we are in for another "high energy" ride! How exciting!!!
Em termos de crescimento ela deve estar, neste momento, medindo por volta do comprimento de um pimentão (de acordo com um dos aplicativos de gravidez que eu tenho no meu telefone) e pesando cerca de 200 g. Na semana passada tivemos uma consulta médica e ouvimos seu coraçãozinho, o que desta vez foi muito mais fácil de encontrar do que nas duas consultas anteriores, e tudo esta bem. Ela, assim como seu irmão, é bem energetica. Eu comecei a sentir movimentos leves com 15 semanas o que não demorou muito para se tornarem mais fortes. Marlon pode senti-la com 16 semanas e uns dois dias atrás eu pude VER os chutes (ou empurroes... ou seja o que for que ela estava fazendo). Eu tinha que lembrar a mim mesma que estamos com apenas 18 semanas de gestação.
We have scheduled the next ultrasound for about 3 weeks from today. Then, we will get to see her again and have the confirmation (as good as we will get at least) that we are, in fact, expecting a little girl. I can't wait! I already started making room in Zuri's closet for dresses and hair bows...I am glad he is still too young to mind =D
Marcamos o próximo ultra-som para cerca de três semanas de hoje. Então, vamos poder vê-la novamente e ter a confirmação que, de fato, estamos à espera de uma menina. Eu mal posso esperar! Eu já comecei a separar espaco no guarda-ropas do Zuri para os vestidinhos e arcos de cabelo ... Ainda é muito pequeno para se importar = D
