Wall Art DIY

Let me start by saying I love Pinterest!! I do not consider myself a creative person so much as an easily inspired one...when i see something i like I just cannot contain myself. This idea is one of those. I had seen it on Pinterest and was just waiting for the perfect picture to make it work. For this, I need to add here a special word of thanks to Paula Perestrelo for the amazing job she did. I think the best part about this project is that, it not only looked amazing, to me at least, but that it cost less than $10 to make!!! We wil definitely be doing this again...maybe change the picture every few months. the possibilities are endless.

Here are the step-by step instructions of how we put it together.

1. pick a picture you love
2. download a free software called PosteRazor from http://posterazor.sourceforge.net/index.php?page=about&lang=english for free!!!! This is the secret of it all...this program will take your picture and print it to a pdf file with multiple pages...you can choose how big you want it
3. print the picture...we had it printed at Office Max on regular 8.5 X 11 paper for 10c/sheet...thinking back on it, we could probably have printed on their thickest cardstock paper for a little bit more money and skipped the next step (next time...)
4. buy foam sheets and cut them to size (they usually come in 9X11).. these were on sale at Michaels for $4...a package of 40 and we used the paper cutter at Office max for free to cut them to the size we wanted. I wish we could have found a package of them all in the same color..maybe black or white...all we could find was the assorted colors bag...maybe if I searched online.

5. modge podge paper to foam...make sure to cover the entire surface of the foam with the modge podge or you WILL get bubbles...I learned the hard way. I also tried modge podge on top of the picture but i did not like the glossy look so I only did a few of the side panels (which I will be replacing soon). The personally liked the non-shiny look better for this picture (it also made my life so much easier).

6. Assemble your picture on the floor or a table...so you can put it up right
7. we used pre-cut foam mounting tape from michaels on the 4 courners of the back of the foam
8.pick a wall and put it up!! We used a piece of yarn and tape to start, then we used a book to make sure the spacing was consistent.

9. we left a few panels out on purpose...be creative!
10. enjoy!!!

Month 5, where do I begin...// 5o mes, por onde comecar...

This is by far the longest I have taken to post here. I am more than half month late for the 5-month post but here we go...

Nossa, acho que dessa vez eu bati o recorde de demora para postar aqui no blog, eu estou mais de meio mes atrasada paro o post de 5 meses...mas aqui vamos nos...

So much has happened in the past few days I am having a hard time remembering where I left off from last time. lets see...A few days after Zuri turned 4-months we went to see the pediatrician for his well-baby appointment. He was at the time measuring 26 in and weighing 17 lbs. He got his 4-month shots, with minimum crying, and had his first fever that night. The fever never got really high and I didn't have to give him anything for it...it was gone by the end of the next day. At the appointment we also discussed Zuri's eating pattern, which was getting to be pretty much every hour at the time, and the doc recommended we start solids. I confess I was a little bit shocked by the suggestion since the "official" position on this is "just breastmilk until 6-months". I had all the intentions of continuing to breastfeed exclusively until 6-months but then I stopped to think critically about the situation and realized Zuri was ready. He had no problem holding his head, his appetite had increased greatly (he was feeding almost twice as often as a couple months ago), and he was very interested in the food on our plates. So, we decided to go for it. And ready he was!!!

Tanta coisa aconteceu nos últimos dias eu estou tendo dificuldade de lembrar onde eu parei da última vez. Vamos ver ... Poucos dias depois que o Zuri completou quatro meses fomos ver o pediatra para a consulta de rotina. Ele estava medindo 66 cm e pesando quase 8 kilos . Ele tambem tomou as vacinas, com o mínimo de choro , e teve sua primeira febre naquela noite. A febre nunca ficou muito alta e eu não tive que dar nada para ele ... no final do dia seguinte, ja tinha ido embora. Na consulta, discutimos o padrão alimentar do Zuri, que estava chegando a ser de hora em hora, entao o medico recomendou começarmos os alimentos sólidos. Confesso que fiquei um pouco chocada com a sugestão já que a posição "oficial" sobre este assunto é "apenas o leite materno até seis meses". Eu tinha todas as intenções de continuar a amamentar exclusivamente até os 6 meses, mas depois parei para pensar criticamente sobre a situação e percebi que o Zuri estava pronto. Ele não tinha nenhum problema segurando sua cabeça, seu apetite aumentou muito (ele estava se alimentando quase duas vezes mais que alguns meses atrás), e ele estava muito interessado na comida em nossos pratos. Então, decidimos ir em frente. E como ele estava pronto!

He made a few funny faces at first (a few spoons full) but has never rejected anything we have given him. We are sticking to fruits and veggies and adding a new one about every four days. So far he has had sweet potatoes, yellow squash, butternut squash, pear, peach, papaya, peas, green beans and bananas. Next on the list we have apples, avocado, and mango...He usually eats as much as we have to feed him, i.e. a whole pear, whole peach, whole yellow squash, etc. I am making everything at home and the fact that he likes it all so much is so encouraging to me.

Ele fez algumas caras engraçadas np comeco (nas primeiras colheradas), mas nunca rejeitou qualquer coisa que tenhamos dado a ele. Estamos comecando com frutas e vegetais e adicionando uma nova a cada quatro dias. Até agora ele teve batata-doce, abóbora amarela, abóbora, pêra, pêssego, mamão, ervilhas, vagem e banana. Em seguida na lista temos maçãs, abacate e manga ... Ele geralmente come tudo que colocamos no pratinho pra ele, ou seja, uma pêra toda, pêssego todo, abóbora amarela inteira, etc Eu estou fazendo tudo em casa e o fato de que ele esta gostando muito de tudo me encoraja muito.

This month we also got our first tooth! it came out really slowly. In fact, it has been about four weeks now and I don't think it is completely out yet. I know its neighbor should be popping out shortly, although it is not yet showing any signs.

Este mês nós também tivemos o aparecimento do nosso primeiro dente! Ele veio bem lentamente. Na verdade, tem sido de cerca de quatro semanas agora e eu não acho que está completamente fora ainda. Eu sei que o vizinho do lado deve estar aparecendo em breve, embora ainda não está dando nenhum sinal ainda.

But, the biggest event by far this month was our family vacation to visit our family in Massachusetts. We kind of decided on the date last minute but I think the timing couldn't be better. The beauty of the New England fall is unmatched! We started off by driving to Dallas area since Marlon was participating in the adventurer family camp and Camp Lake Whitney. The drive was definitely the worst part of the trip....it took as 12 hours to get to Dallas...Although we made several stops along the way, that is just too long for anyone to sit in a car...especially a 5-month old. while Marlon was at camp, Zuri and I stayed with Marlon 's cousin and his wife Paula. Paula loves to take pictures and Zuri and I were her models for the weekend. She did an amazing job, and by the end of our stay, we had almost 5 GB of pictures to take home.

Mas definitivamente, o maior evento deste mês foi a nossa viajem de férias para visitar a família em Massachusetts. Mesmo que a data foi decida meio que de última hora, eu acho que o momento não poderia ter sido melhor. A beleza do outono da Nova Inglaterra é incomparável! Começamos dirigindo para a área Dallas Ja que o Marlon estava participando do Acampamento de familias dos Aventureiros no Camp Lake Whitney. A viagem de carro foi definitivamente a pior parte da viagem .... levamos 12 horas para chegar a Dallas. Apesar de várias paradas ao longo do caminho,  ainda assim é muito tempo para qualquer pessoa ficar sentado em um carro ... especialmente um bebe de 5 meses. Enquanto Marlon estava no acampamento, Zuri e eu ficamos cna casa do primo do Marlon, Otavio, e sua esposa, Paula. Paula adora tirar fotos e Zuri e eu fomos seus modelos para o fim de semana. Ela fez um trabalho incrível, e até o final de nossa estadia, tivemos quase 5 GB de imagens para levar para casa.

We left very early on Monday morning as we began our journey towards Massachusetts. Compared to the car ride to Dallas, the flight was a breeze. Zuri basically ate and slept all the way there. Once we arrives, my parents were eagerly waiting to meet us. This was the first time Zuri and my parents met...it was quite a party. The grandmas made sure we had all we needed for our stay...My mom actually had more things for Zuri than I do at home! Marlon's parents also came to see us when we arrived and the party continued...

Saímos bem cedo na manhã de segunda-feira e começamos nossa jornada para Massachusetts. Comparado com a viagem de carro para Dallas, o vôo foi uma brisa. Zuri, basicamente, comeu e dormiu todo o caminho. Assim que chegamos, os meus pais estavam esperando ansiosamente para nos encontrar. Esta foi a primeira vez que o Zuri e meus pais se encontraram ... foi uma festa e tanto. As vovos se certificaram de que tinhamos tudo o que era necessário para a nossa estadia e mais... Minha mae ela realmente tinha mais coisas para o Zuri do que eu mesma tenho em casa! Os pais do Marlon também vieram para nos ver quando chegamos e a festa continuou ...

For the two weeks we spent there we divided the time between the two sets of grandparents and we had a blast. I especially enjoyed longer naps and showers...ohh the simple pleasures of life. Zuri also had a great time. After spending barely one day at the grandparent's house he said his first word "vovo" which is Portuguese for grandma. Five months repeating mamma and dadda were overpowered by one day with the grandmas...and I thought "m" sounds were easier to make than "v" sounds...Anyways, he spent the two weeks repeating the word over and over, to his grandmas delight.

Durante as duas semanas que passamos lá, dividimos o tempo entre os dois pares de avós e aproveitamos bastante. Eu gostei principalmente da possibilidade de tirar cochilos mais longos e banhos mais demorados... ohh os prazeres simples da vida. Zuri também taproveitou bastante. Depois de passar nem um dia inteiro na casa da avo, ele disse que sua primeira palavra "vovó". Cinco meses repetindo mama e dadda foram dominados por um dia com os avós ... e eu pensei que os sons de "m"  eram mais fáceis de fazer do que os de "v" ... De qualquer forma, ele passou as duas semanas repetindo vovó, para o deleite das vovós.

While we were there, hurricane/monster storm Sandy hit the east coast. Thankfully, Massachusetts was spared and all we had was lots of rain and wind. For us, this rainy day was an added blessing since both of my parents got to stay home from work and enjoy one extra day with us. Zuri was definitely spoiled by all the attention he got...Now that we are back home he is having to re-learn the art of entertaining himself.

Enquanto estávamos lá, o furacão Sandy atingiu a costa leste. Felizmente, Massachusetts foi poupado e tudo o que tivemos foi muita chuva e vento. Para nós, este dia de chuva foi uma bênção adicional uma vez que ambos os meus pais puderam ficar em casa do trabalho e desfrutar de um dia a mais com a gente. Zuri foi definitivamente mimado de tanta atenção que ele recebeu ... Agora que estamos de volta em casa, ele está tendo que reaprender a arte de entreter-se sozinho.

Now we have been back home for a week and are trying to reestablish a routine. Zuri is eating solids three times a day and breastfeeding the rest of the time. He has been consistently taking his naps in the morning and afternoon, and sleeping in his crib. He has grown so much this last month...when we arrived I noticed he was already way past the weight limit on his bassinet so i took it down...with tears in my eyes. my oh my...he is already outgrowing things. I sat him down on the bathroom scale a few days ago and he was weighing 20 lbs!!!! (I don't know how acurate that is but it is the best I have at home). We just had to upgrade to size 4 diapers and are only 2 lbs away from having to get him a new carseat...

Agora estamos de volta em casa por uma semana, estamos tentando restabelecer uma rotina. Zuri está comendo sólidos três vezes ao dia e amamentando o resto do tempo. Ele tem sido consistentemente tirado seus cochilos da manhã e da tarde, e dormido no berço. Ele cresceu muito neste último mês ... quando chegou eu notei que ele já estava muito além do limite de peso no moises, então eu desmontei ... com lágrimas nos meus olhos. ... ele já está perdendo tantas coisas por causa do tamanho. Sentei-o na balanca de banheiro há alguns dias atras e ele estava pesando 9 kilos!! (Eu não sei quao certo esta essa balanca mas é o melhor que tenho em casa). Nós apenas tivemos que mudar para tamanho 4 das fraldas mas faltam apenas 1 kg para ele ter que usar uma caideirinha do carro nova ...

Over the last month, Zuri has gotten a lot better at balancing himself in the seating position, he rarely falls over now. He is an expert grabber, especially of my hair. He is still more excited about playing with people than toys but he has developed a special liking to a little toy car he got from tio Otavio and tia Paula (Marlon's cousin and his wife). He spends a long time looking at it, tasting it, turning it...after a while he lets it go and then picks it up again like he has never seen it before =) The babbling has also increased. He has expanded his consonant sounds to include Ts and Gs. He also tries to sing with us sometimes too (I will post a video of that sometime).

Durante o mês passado, Zuri melhorou muito na questao do equilibrio na posição de sentar, ele raramente cai agora. Ele tambem é um especialista em agarrar as coisas, especialmente meu cabelo. Ele ainda gosta mais de brincar com as pessoas do que com brinquedos, mas ele desenvolveu um gosto especial por um carrinho de brinquedo que ele ganhou de tio Otávio e tia Paula  (primo Marlon e sua esposa). Ele passa um tempao olhando para ele, experimentando, mundando de posicao ... depois de um tempo ele deixa cair e depois pega de novo, como se ele nunca tivesse visto antes =) O balbucio também aumentou. Ele amumentou o seu vocabulario de consoantes para incluir Ts e Gs. Ele também tenta cantar com a gente quando cantamos pra ele (um dia desses eu posto o video).

Month 4// 4o Mes

Despite my desire to update this blog every two weeks or so, it seems that now I only get to do about once a month. This 4th month was a very eventful one and since this has the potential to be a very extensive post, I will do my best to finish before Zuri wakes up from his nap.

Apesar do meu desejo de atualizar este blog a cada duas semanas, parece que agora eu só consigo atualiza-lo uma vez por mês. Este quarto mês foi cheio de coisas novas e uma vez que este tem o potencial para ser um post muito extenso, vou fazer o meu melhor para terminar antes Zuri acorde de sua sonequinha.

Let's see...for milestones we reached this month...Zuri is doing very well with head control and can turn from his back to his belly (both to the left and to the right). He actually enjoys tummy time a lot, which is interesting to me since it seemed like he hated it just a few weeks ago. I guess now that he can hold his head up for longer he has more fun on his tummy. He is grabbing everything...EVERYTHING. I currently have about half of my hair left and shoulders that are full of scratches. It doesn't seem to matter how short we keep his nails...somehow he manages to scratch me. He has also found his feet and reaches for them often...he has not put them in his mouth yet though. He can sit with a little support but absolutely dislikes the Bumbo seat. Every time we put him on it, he arches his back and tries to lean backwards to free his legs...it is a scary sight to me and I worry that he will hurt his neck and back so we don't leave him there for too long...I am hoping he will eventually enjoy it. The arching of the back is a new thing too...he will sometimes do it when he is on our lap...like older kids who want to crawl around or walk, except he can do neither of those yet. I am here just wondering how this is going to go when he can actually do those things.

Vamos ver ... os marcos de desenvolvimento que atingimos neste mês ... Zuri está indo muito bem controlando a cabecinha e consegue virar das costas para a barriga (tanto para a esquerda e para a direita). Ele realmente gosta muito de ficar de barriga, o que é interessante para mim pois parecia que ele odiava ficar assim a apenas algumas semanas atrás. Eu acho que agora que ele pode erguer a cabeça por mais tempo ele se diverte mais de barriga. Ele está querendo pegar em tudo ... TUDO. Eu tenho atualmente cerca de metade do meu cabelo e ombros que estão cheios de arranhões. Não importa quão curtas as unhas ... de alguma forma ele consegue me arranhar. Ele também encontrou seus pés e pega neles ...ele não os colocá na boca ainda. Ele consegue sentar-se com um pouco de apoio, mas absolutamente não gosta da cadeirinha Bumbo. Toda vez que o colocou nela, ele arqueia as costas e tenta se inclinar para trás para soltar as perninhas ... é uma visão assustadora para mim e eu me preocupo que ele vai machucar o pescoço e as costas por isso, não o deixamos lá por muito tempo ... Eu espero que ele eventualmente aprenda a gostar da cadeirinha. Essa coisa de se jogar para tras é nova também ... ele faz isso as vezes tambem quando ele está no nosso colo ... parecendo as crianças mais velhas que querem a engatinhar ou andar, exceto que ele pode fazer nenhum desses ainda. Eu estou aqui me perguntando como é que vai ser quando ele conseguir fazer essas coisas. 

This month we started teaching Zuri sign language. Since babies are able sign much before they can talk, we are hoping to avert some of the troubles and frustrations of toddlerhood by teaching him ways to communicate his needs. We have started off with 5 signs, mommy, daddy, milk, more, and dog, although we have mainly focused on the first three. He is currently not coordinated enough to repeat the signs back but he watches us very carefully when we sign and I am pretty sure he understands the sign for milk. It is actually funny when he is grumpy and we sign for milk he smiles and acts excited. We don't expect him to be able to sign back for at least another couple of months. However, once he has mastered these first 5 we will move on to more signs. 

Este mês começamos a ensinar Zuri linguagem de sinais. Ja que os bebês são capazes de fazer sinais muito antes que possam falar, estamos tentando evitar alguns dos problemas e frustrações da primeira infância, ensinando-lhe maneiras de comunicar suas necessidades. Nós começamos com 5 sinais, mamãe, papai, leite, mais, e cachorro, embora tenhamos concentrado principalmente nos três primeiros. Ele ainda não tem coordenacao motora o suficiente para repetir os sinais de volta, mas ele nos observa atentamente e eu tenho certeza que ele entende o sinal para o leite. É engraçado quando ele esta mal-humorado e nósfazemos o sinal para leite, ele sorri e age animado. Nós não esperamos que ele seja capaz de copiar os sinais por pelo menos mais uns dois meses. Mas, uma vez que ele tem dominado estes cinco primeiro vamos passar para mais outros.

So far Zuri's eyes have not changed color and his hair looks redder than ever. I had a feeling from the early days that his hair was going to curl and now I think we have confirmation. In the picture above it just looks messy, but in reality, the top longer part of his hair is full of curls. The new hair coming in is still too short to curl it seems...we'll see when it gets longer. 

Até agora os olhos Zuri não mudaram de cor e seu cabelo parece mais vermelho do que nunca. Desde os primeiros dias eu tinha uma ideia que o cabelo dele ia ficar enrolado e agora eu acho que nós temos confirmação. Na foto acima, o cabelo esta baguncado, mas na realidade, a parte de cima fica cheia de cachinhos. O cabelo novo que vem crescendo parece que ainda é muito curto para enrolar ... vamos ver quando ficar mais longo.

It is now almost 1-week since I started this post I am just now able to get back to it...and I though I was going to be able to finish it during his nap...Anyway...sooooo
This month we also took Zuri "swimming,"and by that I mean we took him to the pool and  had some purposeful activities which included submerging him a couple of times. He gets really serious when we take him in the water and doesn't move around much but he does not cry or complain. We are hoping to get him used to the pool and hopefully teaching him some water safety techniques early. He is the son of two life-guards after all.


Agora ja fazem  quase 1 semana desde que eu comecei este post eu so agora tive a oportunidade de voltar a ele ... e eu que achei que ia conseguir terminar durante a soneca do Zuri ... Enfim ...
Este mês também levamos o Zuri para "nadar", e com isso quero dizer que o levamos para a piscina e praticamos algumas atividades intencionais que incluíram submergindo-lo umas duas vezes. Ele fica todo sério quando esta na água e não se movimenta muito, mas ele não chorar nem reclamar. Nós esperamos que  ele se acostume com a agua para poder ensinar-lhe algumas técnicas de segurança cedo. Afinal de tudo, ele é o filho de dois salva-vidas.

This month we also finally started usuing the jumper we got as a baby shower gift back in April. He seems to enjoy the new found freedom it provides and when we are sitting on the floor close to him he can play on it for a good 30 minutes.

Este mês, finalmente comecamos a usar o pulador que ganhamos de presente no cha de bebe em abril. Ele parece gostar da nova liberdade que o pulador proporciona, e quando estamos sentados no chão, perto dele que ele brinca por uns bons 30 minutos.

But the most important event this month was Zuri's dedication. After a few weeks trying to coordinate schedules and postponing a few times, it finally worked out for one of the weekends and we seized the opportunity. The only thing was that the days that preceded the dedication were so hectic (we were convinced Zuri was teething), we forgot to let people know so some of our friends could not attend =(
But I have included below the video we prepared and a recording of the beautiful song performed by our friends Holly, Bong, and Dodge.


Mas o evento mais importante do mês foi a dedicação de Zuri. Depois de algumas semanas tentando coordenar os horários e adiar algumas vezes, finalmente marcamos para um dos fins de semana e aproveitamos a oportunidade. A única coisa foi que os dias que antecederam a dedicação foram tão agitadados (estávamos convencidos de que veriamos uns dentinhos no Zuri), nos esquecemos de avisar nas pessoas e alguns de nossos amigos não puderam comparecer = (

Month 3!!!!// Mes 3!!!!

Babies do grow fast! I can hardly believe we have already reached month number 3. As I was looking through old pictures and previous blog posts over the last few days I am amazed at how much Zuri has changed. For starters, he sure has grown. A LOT!! I have already collected a big bag of clothes that do not fit him any more. This bag includes a lot of onesies I didn't even have time to try =(

Bebês crescem muito rápido! Mal posso acreditar que já chegamos a 3 meses. Nestes últimos dias eu estive dando uma olhanda nas fotos antigas e posts anteriores sobre e fiquei espantada com o tanto Zuri mudou. Para começar, ele com certeza tem crescido. Eu já juntei um saco grande de roupas que não cabem mais nele. Incluindo um monte de "onesies" (nao sei o nome) que eu nem sequer tive a oportunidade de experimentar = (

The little boy is only 3-months old and he is almost too big for his swing already. He can now reach for the toys that hang from the bar and enjoys moving them. Lately, he has been doing a lot with his hands. I was expecting him to find them and look at them for a while...but no, he went straight to grabbing. Let's just say that now I know why new mom's have less hair...and a lot more scratches too (regardless of how short we keep his nails)!

O garoto tem apenas 3 meses de idade e ja esta quase grande demais para o seu balancinho. Ele agora consegue alcancar os brinquedinhos pendurados e gosta de movê-los. Ultimamente, ele tem feito muito com as mãosinhas. Eu estava esperando ele encontrá-las e ficar observando elas por um tempo ... mas não, ele foi direto para a agarrar tudo que ve. Vamos apenas dizer que agora eu sei porque novas mães tem menos cabelo ... e muito mais arranhões  também (independentemente de quão curtas as unhas)!

Last week Zuri attended his first wedding. It was the beautiful wedding of our friends Sean and Ia which took place at a ranch close to San Antonio, TX. That was about a 5 hour drive each way for us but it turned out well. There was no crying until the trip back but it only lasted a few minutes until we found a place to stop. Zuri also behaved during the wedding and let mommy watch the whole thing while he slept.

Na semana passada Zuri assistiu a seu primeiro casamento. Foi o belo casamento de nossos amigos de Sean e Ia, que foi celebrado em um rancho perto de San Antonio, Texas. Isso foi cerca de 5 horas de carro para nós, mas acabou bem. Não houve choro até que a viagem de volta, mas só durou alguns minutos, até que encontramos um lugar para parar. Zuri também se comportou durante o casamento e deixar a mamãe assistir tudo, enquanto ele dormia.

Zuri also got to meet daddy's cousin Otavio and his beautiful wife Paula. He had a lot of fun with them and got his first ever toy car too.

Zuri também conheceu o primo de papai, Otávio, e sua bela esposa, Paula. Ele se divertiu muito com eles e ganhou o seu  primeiro carrinho de brinquedo.

Within the next few weeks we plan on "graduating" Zuri from his bassinet in our room to the crib in his room. I know it is just the room down the hall but I am already feeling separation anxiety. We will see how this transition is going to go. =)

Dentro das próximas semanas, nós planejamos "graduar" Zuri do moises onde ele dorme no nosso quarto para o berço no quarto dele. Eu sei que é apenas o quarto no fim do corredor, mas eu já estou sentindo a ansiedade de separação. Vamos ver como vai ser essa transição. =)

Weeks 11 and 12: The Growth Spurt// Semanas 11 e 12: Fase de Crescimento

It lasted about 10 days but felt more like an eternity. During these 10 days Zuri went from being a sweet little boy who was sleeping as many as 10 hours/night to an insatiable baby who was very cranky unless he was either eating or sleeping. He insisted on eating close to every hour day and night and had very uncomfortable sleep during those days. It got to the point where I had to make a couple of trips to the pediatrician who thought he might also be having some allergic reaction to something in my diet. Not to mention that those two weeks were some of the busiest weeks for Marlon and he was not home for quite a few of those days. Needless to say, it is no wonder I am only getting to write about it now  (2 weeks later) and I have no pictures for those days except for the ones I took at the end of week 12 when things were returning to normal.

Durou cerca de 10 dias, mas pareceu mais como uma eternidade. Durante estes 10 dias Zuri deixou de ser um menininho doce que estava dormindo até 10 horas por noite e se tornou um bebê insaciável e irritadiço, a nao ser quando ele estava comendo ou dormindo. Ele insistia em comer a cada hora noite e dia, tendo um sono muito desconfortável durante esses dias. Chegou a um ponto em que eu tive que fazer algumas viagens ao pediatra, que pensou que ele também poderia estar tendo alguma reação alérgica a algo na minha dieta. Sem mencionar que essas duas semanas foram alguns dos dias maisocupados para Marlon e ele não estava em casa por muito daqueles dias. Não é de admirar que eu estou apenas começando a escrever sobre isso agora (duas semanas depois) e eu não tenho fotos para os dias exceto as que tirei no final de semana 12, quando as coisas estavam voltando ao normal.

Praise God we got through those days and have returned to a more livable schedule of eating and sleeping. Today as I looked back at the pictures from his birth until now, I could really see how much he has grown. He is also so much more interactive too. Even when he wakes up in the middle of the night (happens sometimes depending on how early he falls asleep) he is all smiles and talk (or coos).  Marlon and I love to watch him show us all the things he is learning. The new trick for these weeks is that he smacks his lips when we blow him a kiss. It seems to be his attempt a blowing a kiss.

Louvado seja Deus porque aqueles dias ja passaram e agora retornamos a uma rotima mais amigavel. Hoje,  depois de passar algum tempo vendo as fotos do nascimento do Zuri até agora, eu pude realmente ver o quanto ele cresceu. Ele também esta muito mais interativo. Mesmo quando ele acorda no meio da noite (acontece algumas vezes dependendo do quão cedo ele cai no sono), ele é todo sorrisos e conversa. Marlon e eu adoramos vê-lo mostrar-nos todas as coisas que ele está aprendendo. O novo truque para essas semanas é que ele tenta mandar beijinhos quando agente manda beijinhos pra ele. Ele ainda nao aprendeu a juntar os labios mas tenta fazer o barulinho com a lingua.

Since I will be putting a new "3-month" post in the next few days, I will end this post here by saying that I am really loving being a mommy to this amazing little guy and that although these days were a bit tough, I am happy to be here for him!

Como eu estarei colocando um novo post de "três meses" nos próximos dias, vou terminar este post aqui dizendo que eu estou realmente amando ser a mamãe desse menininho incrível e que, embora estes dias foram um pouco difíceis, estou feliz de estar aqui para ele!

Month 2// Mes 2

Here we are at month number 2!!! This month was definitely easier than the first and a lot funnier too! Now that Zuri is spending a lot more time awake during the day we get to interact much more. He has also been revealing little bits of his personality to us and we are thoroughly enjoying this new phase. He loves human interaction, much more than any toy we show him. When we sit him down supported by the Boppy pillow and sit next to him he loves to stare at our faces and tries to copy our facial expressions. Lately he has been making a lot of noise like he is trying to participate in the conversation. If we sit and talk to him, the little guy will watch and make sounds in response. I am absolutely loving our conversations every day. He also likes to talk to the ceiling fan when we put him down on our bed...today he had a long conversation with the fan (part of which I recorded and you can watch below). He also like to make noise when we sing or when he listens to music...Last friday at church, we were sitting by the piano during song service and he started to "sing" along with us...it was so cute I almost cried (wish I could have recorded it for you to see).

Aqui estamos no mes número 2!  Este mês foi definitivamente mais fácil do que o primeiro e muito engraçado também! Agora que Zuri está gastando muito mais tempo acordado durante o dia nos podemos interagir muito mais. Ele também esta revelando pequenos pedaços de sua personalidade para nós e nós estamos gostando muito dessa nova fase. Ele ama a interação humana, muito mais do que qualquer brinquedo que possamos mostrar a ele. Quando nós colocamos ele sentadinho apoiado pelo travesseiro Boppy e sentamos ao lado dele ele gosta de olhar para os nossos rostos e tenta copiar as nossas expressões faciais. Ultimamente, ele vem fazendo muitos sonzinhos, como se ele estivesse tentando participar da conversa. Quando nos sentamos e conversamos com ele, o garoto fica so observando e tenta responder. Estou absolutamente amando nossas conversas todos os dias. Ele também gosta de falar com o ventilador de teto, quando o colocou na nossa cama ... hoje ele teve uma longa conversa com o ventilador (parte da qual eu gravei e você pode assistir abaixo). Ele também gosta de fazer sons quando cantamos ou quando ele ouve música ... sexta-feira passada na igreja, estávamos sentados atras do piano durante o serviço de cantico e ele começou a "cantar" junto com a gente ... foi tão bonitinho que eu quase chorei (queria ter gravado para você verem).

When it comes to sleeping, he is doing pretty good too. For the last 2-3 weeks he has been going to bed between 7-10 pm depending on whether we are home during the evening or coming home from church. Once he is in bed he usually sleeps 5-7 hours until he is ready to eat and sleep again for another 3-4 hours til morning. So basically, I wake up 1 to 2 times during the night. Although, I should explain that when he wakes up to feed it usually takes about 1 hour before he is back to sleep (a few minutes to change the diaper, 20-35 minutes to feed, and the rest of the time to burp and rock him). But all this sleep comes at the price of staying awake a lot more during the day...I definitely don't mind but I am getting a lot less done around the house.

Quando se trata de dormir, ele está se saindo muito bem também. Nas últimas 2-3 semanas, ele foi dormir entre 7-10 pm, dependendo se estamos em casa durante a noite ou vindo da igreja. Uma vez que ele esta na cama, ele geralmente dorme 5-7 horas até a proxima mamada e dorme de novo por mais 3-4 horas ate de manhã. Então, basicamente, eu acordo 1 a 2 vezes durante a noite. Embora, devo explicar que, quando ele acorda para comer, geralmente, leva cerca de 1 hora antes de ele voltar a dormir (alguns minutos para mudar a fralda, 20-35 minutos para se alimentar, e o resto do tempo para arrotar...). Mas o preco de todas essas horas de sono a noite sao varias horas acordado durante o dia...eu definitivamente nao me importo mas nao consigo fazer muita coisa aqui em casa.

Yesterday, we went to his 2 month appointment. This is the appointment with the first round of immunizations :-( (not counting the one he got at the hospital). I confess that I was worried about his reaction to all the shots and I prayed much for the little man for the last few days. Just the thought of him being in pain was breaking my heart...Well, I gave much thought to this and tried to figure out how best to go about it, specially because I was sure that I would cry if I saw him cry in pain (silly, I know, but most moms will understand me). So I got some breastmilk in a bottle and fed him while he was getting his vaccines (3 injections!!!!). He only cried for a few seconds after the second and little bit more after the more painful third...and that was that. He wasn't even fussy in the afternoon...hopefully he will continue to do well. Praise God!!!!

Ontem, fomos para sua consulta de 2 meses. Esta é a consulta com a primeira rodada de imunizações :-( (sem contar o que ele recebeu no hospital). Confesso que estava preocupada com a reação dele as vacinas e eu orei muito a respeito disto nos últimos dias. So de pensar dele sentir dor quebrou o meu coração ... Bem, eu pensei muito nisso e tentei descobrir a melhor forma proceder, especialmente porque eu tinha certeza que eu iria chorar, se eu visse ele chorar de dor (boba, eu sei, mas a maioria das mães vao me entender). Então, eu coloquei leite materno na mamadeira e dei pra ele enquanto ele estava recebendo suas vacinas (3 injeções!!). ele só chorou por alguns segundos após a segunda e um pouco mais após a mais dolorosa terceira ... e foi isso. Ele nem ficou enjoadinho depois ... espero que ele continue assim. Louvado seja Deus!!

Immunizations apart...Zuri continues to grow following his growth curve perfectly. As of today, he weights 13 lb 11 oz and measures 23 1/2 in. He is quite a big boy and my achy arms can tell you all about it. 

Imunizações aparte ... Zuri continua a crescer e seguir a sua curva de crescimento perfeitamente. Hoje, ele pesou 6.20 kg e mediu 59.5 cm. Ele é um menininho grandinho e meus braços doloridos sao provas disto.

Well, this post is getting long so I am going to end it here. The last thing I want to say is that we are looking forward to out trip next week to the pastor's family retreat (although a little apprehensive about the long car ride- 6 hours). I guess I will have to tell you how that went on the next post. See you next time!

A última coisa que eu quero dizer é que estamos ansiosos para nossa viagem na próxima semana para o retiro de familias de pastores (embora um pouco apreensivos sobre a longa viagem de carro-6 horas). The Mid-Month Update// A Atualizacao da Metade do Mes

Here we are at week #7!  The routine is returning to the Seifert household and it feel good. Zuri is spending a  lot more time awake during the day and sleeping much longer during the night. The world is a little brighter now! Here is the summary of this week's sleep:
Saturday to Sunday = 7 hours
Sunday to Monday = 7 hours
Monday to Tuesday= 4 hours then 4 hours
Tuesday to Wednesday = 8 hours!!! yieeepy!!!
Wednesday to Thursday = 7 hours

Aqui estamos na semana # 7! A rotina está finalmente retornando para a casa Seifert. Zuri está gastando muito mais tempo acordado durante o dia e dormindo mais durante a noite. O mundo esta um pouco mais claro agora! Aqui está o resumo do sono desta semana:

Sábado para domingo = 7 horas
Domingo para segunda-feira = 7 horas
Segunda-feira para terça-feira = 4 horas depois 4 horas
Terça-feira para quarta-feira = 8 horas! yieeepy!
Quarta-feira para Quinta-feira = 7 horas

This week we have been going to Vacation Bible School every night and Zuri is the youngest participant there. I think his favorite part is the singing in the beginning and end...mostly because he is either asleep or nursing the rest of the time =) Our little boy is growing and interacting in all sorts of ways. One of his feats from week 5 is that he actually rolled. Don't ask me how a 1-month old does that...all I know is that I put him down to sleep and hear crying a few minutes later, when I returned to check he had rolled...he has not repeated that since though...I think it scared him more than me. 

Esta semana temos ido para a Escola Crista de Férias todas as noites e nosso  Zuri é a mais jovem participante. Acho que sua parte favorita sao as musicas no início e no fim ... principalmente porque ele fica ou dormindo ou mamando o resto do tempo =) O nosso bebesinho está crescendo e interagindo cada dia mais. Uma de suas façanhas de duas semanas atras é que ele rolou. Não me pergunte como um bebe de 1 mês faz isso ... tudo que eu sei é que eu o coloquei para dormir de um jeito e ouvi ele chorar poucos minutos depois, quando voltei para verificar, ele tinha rolado ... depois deste dia ainda nao repetiu essa facanha... eu acho que ele se assustou mais do que eu.

Our First Month with Zuri// Nosso primeiro mes com o Zuri

Last Thursday (6/21) we celebrated Zuri's one-month birthday. It has been an exciting month in the Seifert household. Time has sure gone by fast, especially when life happens at 2-3 hour intervals. I have even tried to write proper blog posts just about every week...I even have drafts but I was unable to finish them. Since this last week was the completion of his first month, I promised myself I would post.

Na ultima Quinta-feira (21/6) comemoramos o aniversário do Zuri de um mês. Tem sido um mês empolgante na casa Seifert. O tempo se passou rápido, especialmente quando a vida acontece em intervalos de 2-3 horas. Eu até que tentei escrever posts no blog quase toda semana ... eu ate tenho rascunhos, mas infelizmente nao consegui termina-los. Como a semana passada foi a conclusão de seu primeiro mês, eu prometi a mim mesma que ia escrever e postar.

As you may have imagined, there was and still is a lot of adapting going on for the three of us. With my crazy sleep pattern right before the delivery, I thought I would be ready for the "night duty" with the little guy but that was wishful thinking. Although waking up every 2-3 hours is not the ideal for a good night of sleep, I wasn't counting the numerous other times I would wake up with the thousands of different noises that Zuri is capable of making in his sleep. Not to mention the other times I would wake up when he was too quiet to check if he was breathing (I know...cliche but I know all parents will understand me and if you are not a parent trust me when you are a parent you will do it too!). 

Como você pode imaginar, houve e ainda há um muita ao que se adaptar para nós três. Com o meu padrão de sono louco logo antes do parto, eu pensei que eu estaria pronta para o "plantão da noite" com o rapazinho, mas isso foi so uma ilusão. Eu sei que acordar a cada 2-3 horas não é o ideal para uma boa noite de sono, mas o que eu não contava eram as inúmeras vezes que eu acordaria com os milhares de ruídos diferentes que Zuri é capaz de fazer enquanto dorme. E, as vezes, quando ele esta muito quieto tambem acordo para verificar se ele esta respirando (eu sei ... clichê, mas eu sei que todos os pais me entederao e se você não for pai, confia em mim quando eu digo que quando você for um pai você vai fazer isso também!).

But how can I complain when I have this cute active little man to look at even at 3 am? Active indeed! If I thought he moved a lot in my belly...wow...I had no idea that was just an introduction! The latest of his feats is scootching himself all the way to the upper edge of the bassinet while he sleeps!!! Every time I put him down to sleep, I put him in the middle of the bassinet, and he will kick his legs off the sides and pull himself so that by the time he wakes up (2-3 hours later) his head is all the way pushing against the upper edge. When I pick him up, his knees are all red...(consequently, now he only sleeps with something to cover his legs). Although we have seen him move his head back and forth many many times while on his time...we still check on him often. 

Mas como posso reclamar quando eu tenho esse homenzinho lindo e ativo para ver mesmo às 3 da manhã? Ativo de fato! Se eu achava que ele se mexia muito na minha barriga ... wow ... Eu não tinha idéia que era apenas uma introdução! A última de suas façanhas é se arrastar todo o caminho até a borda superior do Moises enquanto ele dorme! Toda vez que eu o coloco para dormir, eu o ponho no meio do Moises. Ele vai chutando as perninhas e empurrando dos lados ate que ele acorda (2-3 horas depois) com a cabeça empurrando contra a borda superior. Quando ele acorda, os joelhos são todos vermelhos ... (portanto, agora ele só dorme com algo para cobrir as pernas). Embora  o tenhamos visto  mover a cabeça de um lado pro outro muitas e muitas vezes, ainda sim passamos boa parte do tempo vigiando a figura enquanto dorme.

Our current adaptation task is going to church. To be sincere, I had never given much thought to this until the last couple of weeks. I had this naive idea that it was just a matter of bringing him...well...Now I know. First we have to think about when he is going to wake up which has to be around one hour before we have to leave for church so that we have time to change him, feed him, and put him back to sleep (so he can bear the ride on his carseat without a meltdown--although last week we had no problems with that...as seen on the picture above). At church, if he cannot fall asleep sometime after our arrival, he will act like he is hungry again until he is fed. On Sabbath mornings I am trying to feed him between Sabbath school and the main service. This has worked well so far, especially when he falls asleep and lets momma watch the sermon. Going to church for the evening meetings is another issue altogether but I wont bore you with the details of that.

Nossa tarefa atual é aprender a ir à igreja. Para ser sincera, eu nunca tinha pensado muito nisso até as últimas duas semanas. Eu tinha essa idéia ingênua de que era apenas uma questão de leva-lo ... bem ... agora eu sei. Primeiro temos de pensar sobre quando ele vai acordar, que tem de ser em torno de uma hora antes de sair para a igreja para que tenhamos tempo para trocá-lo, alimentá-lo, e colocá-lo de volta para dormir (para que ele possa suportar a viajem em seu carseat sem uma crize de choro - embora na semana passada não tivemos problemas com isso ... como pode ser visto na imagem acima). Na igreja, se ele não estiver dormindo algum tempo depois de nossa chegada, ele vai agir como se ele estivesse com fome novamente até que ele seja alimentado. Nas manhãs de sábado eu estou tentando alimentá-lo entre a Escola Sabatina e o culto. Isso tem funcionado bem até agora, especialmente quando ele cai no sono e deixa mãe assistir ao sermão. Ir à igreja para as reuniões à noite é uma outra questão, mas eu não vou te incomodar com os detalhes.

In the meantime, both Marlon and I are loving being parents to our little man. We sure have a lot of fun watching his many facial expressions as he tries to communicate with us. In the last month, Zuri has gained almost 4 lb (from his birthweight) and grown 2.5 in. He is in the 90th percentile for his height and 80th for weight...we got a big "little boy"!! We celebrated Zuri's first month by making wall-art hand and foot prints for his room as well as marking his height on the growth chart. As you can see above, paint and a 1-month old do not go well together =) His hand-prints were almost impossible to get since he would not open his hands for anything and I think we used too much paint but we ended up with a messy picture to remember. Ohhh how we love him!

Entretanto, tanto Marlon como eu estamos amando ser pais do nosso homenzinho. Nos divertimos bastante assistindo suas muitas expressões faciais, enquanto ele tenta se comunicar conosco. No mês passado, Zuri ganhou quase 2 kilos (de seu peso ao nascer) e cresceu mais de 6 cm. Ele e mais alto do que 40% dos meninos com a mesma idade e mais pesado do que 30% dos mesmos ... nós temos um "menininho" bem grande! Comemoramos primeiro mês Zuri, pintando o quadrinho para o quarto com a mão e as pegadas, bem como marcando a sua altura no gráfico de crescimento. Como você pode ver acima, tinta e um bebe de 1 mês de idade não vão bem juntos =)  As impressões da mão foram quase impossíveis de obter uma vez que ele não abria as mãos para nada e eu acho que nós usamos muita tinta, mas acabamos com um quadro memoravel. Ohhh como nós o amamos!
