I LOVE camping!!!!!! There is just something about the smell of fresh grass in the morning and the sight of a million stars in the sky at night that appeal to me so very much. Not to mention the fresh air, the peace, and no cell phone reception =P Unfortunately, with all the moving, pregnancies, and the craziness of life with two small children, camping had not happened in a long while. However, the desire to go is always there and lately it had been stronger than ever. So, I took it upon myself to go digging into our schedules in a desperate attempt to find a bit of time when we could go live in a tent for a few days. Finally, I came across a weekend we would have to drive north to the Dallas area for a mud race the hubby was doing with some of the church youth and BINGO! That seemed like the perfect opportunity. We made the appropriate arrangements, packed the car, and were on our way to Colorado Bend State Park.
Eu AMO acampar !!!!!! Existe algo sobre o cheiro de grama fresca de manhã cedo e à vista de um milhão de estrelas no céu à noite que e irresistível para mim. Sem mencionar o ar fresco, a paz, e a falta de recepção de telefone celular =P Infelizmente, com todas as mudanças, gravidez, e a loucura da vida com duas crianças pequenas, acampar não tinha sido uma possibilidade por algum tempo. No entanto, o desejo de ir sempre está lá e, ultimamente, estava mais forte do que nunca. Então, eu me empolguei e fui olhar a nossa agenda em uma tentativa desesperada para encontrar um espaço de tempo, quando poderíamos ir morar em uma barraca por alguns dias. Finalmente, me deparei com um fim de semana que teríamos de viajar de carro para a área de Dallas para uma corrida que o marido estava participando com alguns dos jovens da igreja e BINGO! Pareceu a oportunidade perfeita. Fizemos os preparativos adequados, colocamos tudo no carro, e nos colocamos a caminho para o Colorado Bend State Park.
We left the house very early in the morning and drove most of the day to get to the Park. Counting all the stops along the way, it took us a about 10 hours before we finally arrived. Once there, we got to walk around and pick a spot to set up camp. Our favorite camping site was located in the "walk-in" side of the camp, which meant we had to carry all of our gear from the parking area to our spot. It was then that a very nice family, who was camping across from us, offered to give us a hand and helped us carry all of our stuff.
Saímos de casa bem cedo de manhã e levamos a maior parte do dia para chegar ao parque. Contando todas as paradas ao longo do caminho, levamos cerca de 10 horas ate que finalmente chegamos. Uma vez lá, nós escolhemos um local para montar acampamento. O nosso lugar favorito estava localizado no lado "walk-in" do acampamento, o que significava que tivemos de carregar todo o nosso equipamento da área de estacionamento para o nosso local. Foi então que uma família muito agradável, que estava acampado em frente a nós, se ofereceu para nos dar uma mão e ajudou-nos levar todas as nossas coisas.
The kids LOVED helping to set up the tents! Once things were mostly in place, I started preparing dinner and we had some wild but friendly visitors coming over to say hello =D
As crianças amaram ajudar a montar a barraca! Depois que as coisas estavam mais ou menos no lugar, eu comecei a preparar a janta e tivemos alguns visitantes selvagens, mas amigáveis vindo para dizer Olá =D
We saw more deer that evening than any other we spent at camp. Most likely because the weekend crowd had not arrived yet and it was basically just us and the nice family across the way. The deer were unafraid and would get really close to us. The kids thought it was the coolest thing in the world. They also really enjoyed watching the crickets and other little critters they found all around. My favorite part, however, was the night sky.
Vimos mais veados naquela noite do que qualquer outra que passamos no acampamento. Provavelmente porque a multidão do fim de semana ainda não tinha chegado e era basicamente nós e a família agradável do outro lado. Os veados estavam sem medo e chegavam bem perto de nós. As crianças acharam que era a coisa mais legal do mundo. Eles também gostaram muito de ver os grilos e outras criaturas pequenas que encontraram ao redor. A minha parte preferida, no entanto, foi o céu noturno.
The pictures above were taken by my husband the first night we were at camp. One of the downsides to city life is that you miss out on seeing a lot because of all the light pollution. Where we live, I only get to see a few starts at night and it is easy to forget there are so many more out there. Nothing like a night away from the city to remind me of the awesomeness in the sky.
As fotos acima foram tiradas pelo meu marido, na nossa primeira noite no acampamento. Uma das desvantagens da vida da cidade é que não da pra ver a maior parte das estrelas por causa de toda a poluição luminosa. Onde moramos, eu só consigo ver poucas estrelas no céu e é fácil esquecer que há milhões de outras. Nada como uma noite longe da cidade para me ajudar a lembrar da grandiosidade do céu.
October is the perfect weather for Texas camping. It is hot enough during the day to enjoy a cooling dip in the river or springs in a hike and cool enough in the evening to make it for a comfortable night of sleep cozied up in your sleeping bag. Z1's prayer that first night was that we would camp for a "long long time." The next morning, the kiddos were up bright and early excited for all that awaited them.
Outubro é o clima perfeito para acampar no Texas. É quente o suficiente durante o dia para desfrutar de um mergulho refrescante no rio depois de uma caminhada e fresquinho o suficiente à noite para ficar confortável dentro do saco de dormir. A oração do Z1 na nossa primeira noite foi que nos pudéssemos acampar por "muito muito tempo." Na manhã seguinte, os pequenos acordaram bem cedo animados pelo dia que os aguardava.
We got up, had breakfast, then decided to go on a hike to Gorman Falls.
Quando nós nos levantamos, tomamos café da manhã, em seguida, decidimos pegar uma trilha para Gorman Falls.
The trail was about 1.2 miles each way. It started off really easy and got progressively more rugged. As you can see from the pictures there were also a lot of cacti along the way. A LOT. towards the end there was a steep drop to the falls and we had to use cables to help us get down from the rocks.
A trilha foi cerca de 2 km em cada sentido. Ela começou bem fácil mas foi ficando progressivamente mais acidentada. Como você pode ver pelas fotos também havia um monte de cactos ao longo do caminho. MUITOS. no final houve uma descida íngreme às quedas e tivemos que usar cabos para nos ajudar a descer pelas rochas.
While Z1 walked most of the way, his little sis preferred to be carried most of the time. No friendly backpacks this time around. But all the effort was worth it when we finally arrived.
Enquanto Z1 andou maior parte do caminho, o sua irmanzinha preferiu para ser carregada a maior parte do tempo. Não tinha mochila desta vez. Mas todo o esforço valeu a pena quando finalmente chegamos.
After taking in the view for a few moments, we decided to go exploring. Although we could not cool off in the springs, we could get into the Colorado River.
Depois de apreciar a vista por alguns momentos, decidimos explorar. Embora não fosse permitido entrar e refrescar nas fontes, poderíamos entrar no rio Colorado.
The day was already pretty hot on the way back and it didn't help that Z2 decided to take a nap as we were hiking. The entire hike back, I was wishing I was back at the river. Z1 also requested to be carried part of the way. All in all, the hike back to the car was a lot faster.
O dia já estava bem quente no caminho de volta e o fato que Z2 decidiu tirar uma soneca enquanto nós estávamos caminhando não ajudou. Todo o caminho de volta, eu fiquei desejando estar de volta no rio. Z1 também pediu para ser carregado uma parte do caminho. No final de tudo, a caminhada de volta para o carro foi muito mais rápida.
After lunch we decided to go explore Spicewood Springs. We started out on the Spicewood Canyon trail and hiked from the camping area to the springs. This trail was a lot easier than the last and, since it was already late afternoon, we saw a lot of creatures, from a herd of goats, armadillos, deer, to javelinas.
Após o almoço, decidimos ir explorar Spicewood Springs. Nós começamos andando na trilha do Spicewood Canyon e caminhamos da área do acampamento ate as fontes. Esta trilha foi muito mais fácil do que a primeira e, uma vez que já era a tardinha, vimos um monte de animaizinhos ao longo do caminho, como cabras, tatus, veados, e porquinhos selvagem.
After a very pleasant hike, we were excited to finally arrive at Spicewood Springs. There we found clear pools and waterfalls where we could cool off and enjoy the late afternoon sun.
Depois de uma caminhada muito agradável, estávamos ansiosos para chegar a Spicewood Springs. Lá encontramos piscinas cristalinas e cachoeiras onde se pudemos nos refrescar e desfrutar do sol da tarde.
The rocky surfaces close to the water were VERY slippery. The kids slipped a couple of times and even I felt into the water with the camera and everything. I am glad to report that both the camera and I survived the fall but unfortunately not the lens :( Since the water was a bit cold and the sun was already getting low on the horizon, we decided to head back to camp. The next day was Sabbath and we decided to go back to the springs for a picnic and to talk about all the wonderful things God has made for us.
As superfícies rochosas perto da água estavam muito escorregadias. As crianças escorregaram algumas vezes e até eu cai na água com a câmera e tudo. Estou feliz de informar que tanto a câmera quanto eu sobrevivemos à queda, mas infelizmente a lente de camera não teve a mesma sorte. Como a água estava um pouco fria e o sol já estava baixo no horizonte, decidimos voltar para o acampamento. O proximo dia era sábado, e nós decidimos voltar para as fontes para um piquenique e para falar sobre todas as coisas maravilhosas que Deus fez por nós.
After our walk we got back to camp and enjoyed each other's company. What a delightful Sabbath it was!
Depois do nosso piquenique, caminhamos de volta para o acampamento e nos deleitamos na companhia uns dos outros. Que sábado maravilhoso este foi!
I think the kids least favorite part about this experience were the outdoor COLD showers =D
Eu acho a parte que as crianças menos gostaram desta experiência foram os banhos frios ao ar livre =D
To be sincere, I was also not a big fan. But we survived that too. Overall, our experience at Colorado Bend State Park was very positive and I would definitely like to go back and explore some more in the future. As for my kids first real camping experience, they absolutely LOVED it! Z2 spent a good portion of the drive back asking to go back to camp. I can't wait to go camping again!!
Para ser sincera, eu também não fui muito fã desta parte. Mas nós sobrevivemos isso também. No geral, a experiência no Colorado Bend State Park foi muito positiva e eu definitivamente gostaria de voltar e explorar um pouco mais no futuro. As crianças absolutamente AMARAM essa primeira experiência acampando de verdade! Z2 passou boa parte da viagem de volta pedindo para voltar para o acampamento. Eu mal posso esperar para ir acampar novamente !!
