Forest Fires and a Trip to Central Oregon/ Queimadas E Uma Viajem para o Centro de Oregon

This is the day where we learned to cherish the unexpected and make the most out of every opportunity. However, before I get to that, I need to take a couple of minutes to go back to the beginning. If this is the first post you read, this is the third out of five and you might want to check out the previous two before moving on ;) We arrived in Oregon on a Monday and everyday up to this point we had been blessed with perfect blue skies and sunshine, until Sabbath. Saturday morning we woke up to somber grey skies. As we got ready and on our way to church, I remember hoping these were just passing clouds and that they would clear up before the afternoon. Well, I couldn't be more wrong! By the time the service ended later that morning, the smell of smoke was clearly noticeable and the "grayness" just thickened. These weren't regular clouds after all, these were clouds of smoke!! That is right! Smoke from the forest fires.

Este é o dia no qual nós aprendemos a aceitar o inesperado e aproveitar ao máximo cada oportunidade. No entanto, antes de eu chegar a este ponto, eu vou tomar alguns minutos para voltar ao início. Se este for o primeiro post sobre as nossas ferias que você esta lendo, este é o terceiro numa serie de cinco e seria uma boa ideia verificar os dois anteriores antes de avançar;) Chegamos em Oregon em uma segunda-feira e todos os dias até este ponto tinhamos sido abençoado com perfeito céu azul e sol, isso é, até o sábado. Sábado de manhã, acordamos com um céu cinzento e escuro. Enquanto nos preparávamos e durante o caminho para a igreja, eu estava esperançosa de que essas nuvens fossem apenas passageiras  e que o sol saísse antes da tarde. Bem, eu não poderia estar mais errada! Ao final do culto naquela manhã, o cheiro de fumaça era claramente perceptível e as nuvens  apenas engrossaram.  Acontece que estas não eram nuvens comuns, o que eu não sabia e que estas eram nuvens de fumaça !! Isso mesmo! Fumaça das queimadas.

Now, I cannot tell you exactly how far these fires were from us but I can say we were not that close to them or in any kind of imminent danger. In fact, we were probably many, many miles away but, the wind had changed direction over night and all of the smoke was being blown our way. I have seen  fire and I have seen smoke but, what I had not seen is a whole city, county, or portion of a state covered in smoke! I had been hearing about all these forest fires in the news lately and, being so far away, I found it hard to fathom the immensity of it. While I was there though, seeing all that endless smoke that lasted for days, really helped me put things into perspective. I cannot even begin to imagine the devastation these fires are causing and the amount of work that is being put in to try to put them out. Those folks are definitely in my prayers.

Agora, eu não sei te dizer exatamente o quão longe estes incêndios estavam de nós, mas eu posso dizer que não estávamos perto deles ou em qualquer perigo. Na realidade, nós, provavelmente estávamos muitas, muitas milhas de distância, mas, o vento mudou de direção durante a noite e toda a fumaça estava sendo levada na nossa direção.  Nos meus alguns anos de vida, eu ja vi alguns incêndios, queimadas, e ja vi fumaça, mas, o que eu não tinha visto antes era uma cidade inteira, municípios, ou parte de um estado inteiro coberto de fumaça! Eu tinha ouvido falar sobre estas queimadas nos jornais ultimamente mas, estando tão longe, era difícil de entender a imensidão da coisa. Enquanto estávamos lá, porém, vendo aquela fumaça interminável que durou dias, realmente me ajudou a colocar as coisas em perspectiva. Eu não posso sequer começar a imaginar a devastação estas queimadas estão causando e o trabalho árduo que tem que ser feito para combater esse fogaréu. Todas as pessoas envolvidas neste trabalho são definitivamente em minhas orações.

On Sunday, our adventurous hosts had planned to take us up to Mt Hood for the day however, when we arrived, we found the smoke had made its way up there too!! Well, we made the most of it anyway, walked around and took some pictures but didn't stay long since the air quality was not so great.  Instead, we drove a few hours inland to Bend, Oregon.  The original plan was to visit the lava fields and hike around there but, by the time we arrived, the park had closed 4 minutes before. No biggie though, we just drove down the road a few miles and hiked to the nearest waterfall. Oh Oregon... 

No domingo, os nossos anfitriões aventureiros tinham planejado nos levar até o Monte Hood, no entanto, quando chegamos, descobrimos que a fumaça estava lá também !! Bem, aproveitamos o que podíamos,  demos uma volta, tiramos algumas fotos, mas não ficamos muito tempo pois a qualidade do ar não estava muito boa. Em vez disso, nós dirigimos algumas horas para o interior de estado na cidade de Bend. O plano original era de visitar os campos de lava vulcânica e caminhar algumas trilhas por lá, mas, no momento em que chegamos, o parque tinha fechado 4 minutos antes. Sem problemas!  Apenas dirigimos mais algumas milhas ate a próxima trilha e caminhamos até a cachoeira mais próxima. Oh Oregon ...

From Mt. Hood to Bend it was quite a bit of a drive so, we when had to make a much needed stop for a bathroom break and a picnic, we stopped at Peter Skene Ogden State Scenic Viewpoint. This place had a beautiful grassy field with picnic tables right next to a breathtaking view of the Crooked River Canyon. 

Do Mt. Hood para Bend dirigimos umas boa distancia e, quando tivemos que fazer uma parada necessária para comer e ir ao banheiro, paramos no Peter Skene Ogden State Scenic Viewpoint. Este lugar tinha um belo campo gramado com mesas de piquenique ao lado de uma vista deslumbrante sobre a garganta do rio Crooked.

While we got set up for lunch, the Zs had some fun playing in the grass and picking dandelions.

Enquanto preparávamos as coisas, os Zs aproveitaram para brincar na grama e colher dente de leão. 

After our little lunch break, we continued our drive to the Newberry National Volcanic Monument. As you look through the pictures you will probably notice the grey and hazy sky in most of them. Truth is, even driving hundreds of miles away from our starting point, we could not outrun the smoke. Since the park was closed when we arrived, we decided to hike a trail along the Deschutes River to Benham Falls. 

Após a nossa pequena pausa para o almoço, continuamos nossa jornada para a Newberry National Volcanic Monument. Como você provavelmente ja percebeu nas fotos, o céu estava bem cinzento e nebuloso durante todo este dia. Na realidade, mesmo dirigindo centenas de kilômetros de distância do nosso ponto de partida, não conseguimos fugir da fumaça. Como o parque estava fechado quando chegamos, decidimos caminhar uma trilha ao longo do rio Deschutes para Benham Falls.

Z2 was not very excited about riding in the carrier this time around. We would have probably let her walk if we weren't for the pressing need to walk faster to avoid the zillions of mosquitoes that were trying to eat us alive. 

Z2 não estava muito feliz em ser carregada na mochila desta vez. Provavelmente teríamos deixádo ela andar se não fosse pela necessidade premente de andar mais rápido para evitar os zilhões de mosquitos que estavam tentando nos comer vivos.

The river started smooth as we began our walk but turned into rapids along the way.

This was such a beautiful hike! Too bad the mosquitoes didn't give us a chance to enjoy it longer. 

Esta trilha foi de mais! Pena que os mosquitos não nos deram a oportunidade de apreciá-la por mais tempo.

 At the end of the day, even if things didn't go exactly as planned, we still had a chance to visit new places, hang out with family, and spend time in nature... who could ask for anything more?!

No final do dia, mesmo se as coisas não saíram exatamente como planejado, tivemos a oportunidade de conhecer novos lugares, passar tempo com a família, desfrutar da natureza ... não temos do que reclamar =D
