Family day at the Zoo// Dia em Familia no Zoologico

After planning and cancelling several times for many different reasons, this Monday we were finally able to enjoy a family day at the Gladys Porter Zoo in Brownsville, TX. The Zoo is about an hour's drive from our house and the weather was just perfect (70's with a nice breeze). This was Zuri's first time at the zoo and I was very excited to see his reaction to all the different animals he was going to see.

Após o planejar e cancelar várias vezes por diversos motivos, nesta segunda-feira, finalmente,  conseguimos desfrutar de um dia em família no Jardim Zoológico Gladys Porter, em Brownsville, Texas. O Zoologico é cerca de uma hora de viagem de carro da nossa casa, e o dia estava perfeito (por volta de 21 graus com uma brisa agradável). Esta foi a primeira vez que levamos o Zuri ao zoológico e eu estava muito animada para ver a reação dele a todos os animais diferentes que ele iria ver.

Our day started very early (as it usually does in this house...around 5:30 am). We got everything ready so that we could leave right about the time for Z's nap-time  We timed it just right because as soon as we were in the car, and Marlon turned on the scripture song lullabies Zuri likes, he was asleep. This made for a very easy drive and even I took a nap. We arrived at the Zoo around 11 am and met our awesome friends, the Perea family. We are so blessed to have been able to spend the day with them, we had a blast!!!

Nosso dia começou bem cedo (como tem sido nos ultimos meses ... o nosso despertadorzinho que nos acorda cerca de 5:30). Aprontamos tudo e nos organizamos para sair por volta do horario do cochilo do Zuri. Nós programamos bem, porque logo que estávamos no carro, e o Marlon ligou o CD de cançoes biblicas de ninar que o Zuri gosta, ele estava dormindo. Assim tivemos uma jornada tranquila, e ate eu tirei uma soneca. Chegamos no zoologico em torno de 11:00 e encontramos os nossos bons amigos, a família Perea. Nos sentimos muito abençoados por poder passar o dia com eles, aproveitamos bastante!

Zuri seemed to be in a bit of a daze while we were there. Maybe it was too many new things all at once...we don't know. We do know he enjoyed watching the birds, especially the ones in the aviary that we could walk inside, as well as a baby deer we saw at the end. He looked at the other animals and smiled sometimes but didn't seem very interested. Maybe when he is a little older...

Enquanto nós estávamos lá, Zuri parecia estar sonhando. Talvez foram muitas coisas novas todas de uma vez... não sei. Ele gostou de ver as aves, especialmente os do aviário que entramos e elas etavam soltas, tambem um bebê cervo que vimos no final. Ele olhou para os outros animais e sorriu algumas vezes, mas não pareceu muito interessado. Talvez quando ele for pouqinho mais velho...

At some point during our walk we came across this awesome playground with lots of slides and other fun areas for the kids to play. Zuri seemed to really enjoy this part. He could crawl around a bit and go down on the slides with us, as well as watch the other children play.

Em um ponto durante a caminhada, nos deparamos com um parquinho maravilhoso com vários escorregadores e áreas divertidas para as crianças brincarem. Zuri pareceu realmente gostar desta parte. Ele pode engatinhar um pouco e descer nos escorregadores com a gente, assim como observar as outras crianças brincando.

It was so good to be able to spend time as a family cherishing each other's company and having lots of fun. 

Foi muito bom poder passar este tempinho juntos como familia e desfrutar da companhia uns dos outros. 

As for me...I think I spent all of my energy for the week on Monday and now I feel like I am moving at a snail's pace...I just want to sleep, sleep, and sleep some more, and not eat anything I cooked myself... I am so grateful I have a loving and caring husband who has helped me tremendously over the last few days despite his busy schedule. 

Quanto a mim ... Eu acho que eu gastei toda a minha energia da semana na segunda-feira e agora eu sinto que estou me movendo a passo de tartaruga... Eu só quero dormir, dormir e dormir um pouco mais, e não quero comer nada que eu mesma cozinhei... Eu sou imensamente grata por ter um esposo amoroso e carinhoso que me ajudou muito ao longo dos últimos dias, apesar de sua agenda lotada.

Hello Everyone!!!! After a 4 month leave of absence from the blog, now is definitely the time to come back! And what better way to do it than with the exciting news that WE ARE EXPECTING OUR SECOND LITTLE ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

 Olá a todos!! Depois de uma ausência de quatro meses do blog, agora é definitivamente a hora de voltar! E que melhor maneira de fazer isso do que com a boa notícia que NóS ESTAMOS ESPERANDO O(A) NOSSO(A) SEGUNDO(A) PEQUENO(A)!!!!!!!!!!!!

As soon as we decided to have children, Marlon and I already knew we wanted them to be relatively close in age. So, we placed our plans in God's hands and waited...now here we are! With Zuri turning 10 months on Thursday (3/21), we are confident that the timing is just right.

Assim que decidimos ter filhos, Marlon e eu já sabiamos que se dependesse de nos seriam relativamente perto em idade. Então, nós colocamos os nossos planos nas mãos de Deus e esperamos... agora aqui estamos nós! Com Zuri completando 10 meses na quinta-feira (21/3), estamos confiantes de que o momento nao podia ser melhor.

To me it is all still a bit surreal. I guess the reality of it all will set in when I actually post this announcement.  Although I definitely feel pregnant. With Zuri I had absolutely no symptoms other than sleepiness, not this time. Over the last couple of weeks I have craved all kinds of weird things...one of these days all I wanted for lunch was a salad with lettuce, kale, spinach  tomatoes and kiwi...that is right KIWI....with an orange on the side. I have not been able to stand the sight of rice, and tonight I had to have a "few" bean burritos from Taco Bell. I have also had a few mild episodes of nausea and once again I am very tired and sleepy (I guess this last part is not too different from the current usual). But I can't complain...we are all healthy and very happy!

Para mim, tudo ainda parece um sonho. Eu acho que a ficha so vai cair quando eu realmente publicar este anúncio. Embora eu definitivamente esteja me sintindo grávida. Com Zuri Eu não tinha absolutamente nenhum outro sintoma fora a sonolência, não desta vez. Durante as últimas duas semanas eu tive um monte de desejos estranhos ... um destes dias tudo que eu quiz para o almoço foi uma salada com alface, couve, espinafre, tomates, e kiwi ... isso mesmo KIWI... e uma laranja. Eu não aguento o cheiro de arroz, e hoje eu absolutamente "tinha" que comer "alguns" burritos de feijão da Taco Bell. Eu também tive alguns episódios de náusea e, como da outra vez, estou muito cansada e sonolenta (acho que esta última parte não é muito diferente do habitual atual). Mas eu não posso reclamar ... estamos todos saudáveis ​​e muito feliz!

We have been to the doctor a couple of times and our little peanut seems to be doing fine. I heard a heartbeat on the last visit and according to the doctor it had just recently started. Our due date based on the last ultrasound is estimated to be 11/2/2013. We are praying for  a healthy development and a healthy pregnancy...we welcome your prayers!

Nós fomos ao médico duas vezes e nosso peqeno amendoim parece estar indo bem. Eu ouvi as batidas do coração na última visita que, de acordo com o médico, tinha começado apenas recentemente. A data prevista para o nascimento com base no último ultra-som é estimada em 02/11/2013. Estamos orando para um desenvolvimento saudável e uma gravidez saudável ... Contamos com suas orações!

The little man is doing great! He is very tall for his age and a happy little guy. He just started saying mamma this past week. Once in a while he says pappa and duck =P He has been trying to copy a lot of the sounds that we make and the other day as I finished a phone conversation with "ate" (later, in Portuguese) he repeated it. He does not seem to be in a hurry to talk. He likes to point at things a lot and his favorite object is the ceiling fan. The other day we were at Lowe's and I took him to the ceiling fan section and held him so he was facing up...he was so happy I wish i had taken a picture of his face...He is quite the fast crawler and also likes to cruise around the furniture. He loves to eat whatever he can feed himself like rice puffs, blueberry halves, grape quarters, cooked brown rice grains (yuck =P), cut up whole wheat spaghetti....

Nosso homenzinho está indo muito bem! Ele é bem alto para a sua idade e uma crianca feliz. Ele começou a falar mamma na semana passada. De vez em quando ele diz pappa e "duck" (pato) = P Ele vem tentando copiar varios sons que fazemos e no outro dia, quando eu terminar uma conversa por telefone, e falei ate, ele repetiu. Ele não parece estar com pressa para falar. Ele gosta de apontar para coisas e seu objeto favorito é o ventilador de teto. No outro dia estávamos em ma loja chamada Lowe's e eu o levei para a seção de ventiladores de teto e segurei ele virado para cima ... Ele ficou tão feliz, mas tao feliz....eu queria ter tirado uma foto da cara que ele fez ... Ele é muito rápido para engatinhar e também gosta de andar se segrando nos moveis. Ele gosta de comer coisas qe ele consegue por na boca sozinho como cereais de arroz,  metades de mirtilo, quartos de uva,  grãos de arroz integral,  e pedacinhos de macarrao integral.

One of these days I was reading through my previous posts and I was so glad that I taken the time to write them....I am not one to journal but I was sure happy to have these memories. At the same time I felt really guilty I had not written for a while, so I am making a promise to myself to write more regularly.

Um dia desses eu estava lendo meus posts anteriores e eu estava tão feliz que eu tomei tempo para escrevê-los .... Eu não sou uma pessoa que mantem diarios, mas eu estou muito feliz de ter essas lembranças. Ao mesmo tempo, eu me senti muito culpada por nao ter escrito ha bastante tempo, então eu estou fazendo uma promessa a mim mesmo de escrever mais regularmente.

Wall Art DIY

Let me start by saying I love Pinterest!! I do not consider myself a creative person so much as an easily inspired one...when i see something i like I just cannot contain myself. This idea is one of those. I had seen it on Pinterest and was just waiting for the perfect picture to make it work. For this, I need to add here a special word of thanks to Paula Perestrelo for the amazing job she did. I think the best part about this project is that, it not only looked amazing, to me at least, but that it cost less than $10 to make!!! We wil definitely be doing this again...maybe change the picture every few months. the possibilities are endless.

Here are the step-by step instructions of how we put it together.

1. pick a picture you love
2. download a free software called PosteRazor from http://posterazor.sourceforge.net/index.php?page=about&lang=english for free!!!! This is the secret of it all...this program will take your picture and print it to a pdf file with multiple pages...you can choose how big you want it
3. print the picture...we had it printed at Office Max on regular 8.5 X 11 paper for 10c/sheet...thinking back on it, we could probably have printed on their thickest cardstock paper for a little bit more money and skipped the next step (next time...)
4. buy foam sheets and cut them to size (they usually come in 9X11).. these were on sale at Michaels for $4...a package of 40 and we used the paper cutter at Office max for free to cut them to the size we wanted. I wish we could have found a package of them all in the same color..maybe black or white...all we could find was the assorted colors bag...maybe if I searched online.

5. modge podge paper to foam...make sure to cover the entire surface of the foam with the modge podge or you WILL get bubbles...I learned the hard way. I also tried modge podge on top of the picture but i did not like the glossy look so I only did a few of the side panels (which I will be replacing soon). The personally liked the non-shiny look better for this picture (it also made my life so much easier).

6. Assemble your picture on the floor or a table...so you can put it up right
7. we used pre-cut foam mounting tape from michaels on the 4 courners of the back of the foam
8.pick a wall and put it up!! We used a piece of yarn and tape to start, then we used a book to make sure the spacing was consistent.

9. we left a few panels out on purpose...be creative!

Month 5, where do I begin...// 5o mes, por onde comecar...

This is by far the longest I have taken to post here. I am more than half month late for the 5-month post but here we go...

Nossa, acho que dessa vez eu bati o recorde de demora para postar aqui no blog, eu estou mais de meio mes atrasada paro o post de 5 meses...mas aqui vamos nos...

So much has happened in the past few days I am having a hard time remembering where I left off from last time. lets see...A few days after Zuri turned 4-months we went to see the pediatrician for his well-baby appointment. He was at the time measuring 26 in and weighing 17 lbs. He got his 4-month shots, with minimum crying, and had his first fever that night. The fever never got really high and I didn't have to give him anything for it...it was gone by the end of the next day. At the appointment we also discussed Zuri's eating pattern, which was getting to be pretty much every hour at the time, and the doc recommended we start solids. I confess I was a little bit shocked by the suggestion since the "official" position on this is "just breastmilk until 6-months". I had all the intentions of continuing to breastfeed exclusively until 6-months but then I stopped to think critically about the situation and realized Zuri was ready. He had no problem holding his head, his appetite had increased greatly (he was feeding almost twice as often as a couple months ago), and he was very interested in the food on our plates. So, we decided to go for it. And ready he was!!!

Tanta coisa aconteceu nos últimos dias eu estou tendo dificuldade de lembrar onde eu parei da última vez. Vamos ver ... Poucos dias depois que o Zuri completou quatro meses fomos ver o pediatra para a consulta de rotina. Ele estava medindo 66 cm e pesando quase 8 kilos . Ele tambem tomou as vacinas, com o mínimo de choro , e teve sua primeira febre naquela noite. A febre nunca ficou muito alta e eu não tive que dar nada para ele ... no final do dia seguinte, ja tinha ido embora. Na consulta, discutimos o padrão alimentar do Zuri, que estava chegando a ser de hora em hora, entao o medico recomendou começarmos os alimentos sólidos. Confesso que fiquei um pouco chocada com a sugestão já que a posição "oficial" sobre este assunto é "apenas o leite materno até seis meses". Eu tinha todas as intenções de continuar a amamentar exclusivamente até os 6 meses, mas depois parei para pensar criticamente sobre a situação e percebi que o Zuri estava pronto. Ele não tinha nenhum problema segurando sua cabeça, seu apetite aumentou muito (ele estava se alimentando quase duas vezes mais que alguns meses atrás), e ele estava muito interessado na comida em nossos pratos. Então, decidimos ir em frente. E como ele estava pronto!

He made a few funny faces at first (a few spoons full) but has never rejected anything we have given him. We are sticking to fruits and veggies and adding a new one about every four days. So far he has had sweet potatoes, yellow squash, butternut squash, pear, peach, papaya, peas, green beans and bananas. Next on the list we have apples, avocado, and mango...He usually eats as much as we have to feed him, i.e. a whole pear, whole peach, whole yellow squash, etc. I am making everything at home and the fact that he likes it all so much is so encouraging to me.

Ele fez algumas caras engraçadas np comeco (nas primeiras colheradas), mas nunca rejeitou qualquer coisa que tenhamos dado a ele. Estamos comecando com frutas e vegetais e adicionando uma nova a cada quatro dias. Até agora ele teve batata-doce, abóbora amarela, abóbora, pêra, pêssego, mamão, ervilhas, vagem e banana. Em seguida na lista temos maçãs, abacate e manga ... Ele geralmente come tudo que colocamos no pratinho pra ele, ou seja, uma pêra toda, pêssego todo, abóbora amarela inteira, etc Eu estou fazendo tudo em casa e o fato de que ele esta gostando muito de tudo me encoraja muito.

This month we also got our first tooth! it came out really slowly. In fact, it has been about four weeks now and I don't think it is completely out yet. I know its neighbor should be popping out shortly, although it is not yet showing any signs.

Este mês nós também tivemos o aparecimento do nosso primeiro dente! Ele veio bem lentamente. Na verdade, tem sido de cerca de quatro semanas agora e eu não acho que está completamente fora ainda. Eu sei que o vizinho do lado deve estar aparecendo em breve, embora ainda não está dando nenhum sinal ainda.

But, the biggest event by far this month was our family vacation to visit our family in Massachusetts. We kind of decided on the date last minute but I think the timing couldn't be better. The beauty of the New England fall is unmatched! We started off by driving to Dallas area since Marlon was participating in the adventurer family camp and Camp Lake Whitney. The drive was definitely the worst part of the trip....it took as 12 hours to get to Dallas...Although we made several stops along the way, that is just too long for anyone to sit in a car...especially a 5-month old. while Marlon was at camp, Zuri and I stayed with Marlon 's cousin and his wife Paula. Paula loves to take pictures and Zuri and I were her models for the weekend. She did an amazing job, and by the end of our stay, we had almost 5 GB of pictures to take home.

Mas definitivamente, o maior evento deste mês foi a nossa viajem de férias para visitar a família em Massachusetts. Mesmo que a data foi decida meio que de última hora, eu acho que o momento não poderia ter sido melhor. A beleza do outono da Nova Inglaterra é incomparável! Começamos dirigindo para a área Dallas Ja que o Marlon estava participando do Acampamento de familias dos Aventureiros no Camp Lake Whitney. A viagem de carro foi definitivamente a pior parte da viagem .... levamos 12 horas para chegar a Dallas. Apesar de várias paradas ao longo do caminho,  ainda assim é muito tempo para qualquer pessoa ficar sentado em um carro ... especialmente um bebe de 5 meses. Enquanto Marlon estava no acampamento, Zuri e eu ficamos cna casa do primo do Marlon, Otavio, e sua esposa, Paula. Paula adora tirar fotos e Zuri e eu fomos seus modelos para o fim de semana. Ela fez um trabalho incrível, e até o final de nossa estadia, tivemos quase 5 GB de imagens para levar para casa.

We left very early on Monday morning as we began our journey towards Massachusetts. Compared to the car ride to Dallas, the flight was a breeze. Zuri basically ate and slept all the way there. Once we arrives, my parents were eagerly waiting to meet us. This was the first time Zuri and my parents met...it was quite a party. The grandmas made sure we had all we needed for our stay...My mom actually had more things for Zuri than I do at home! Marlon's parents also came to see us when we arrived and the party continued...

Saímos bem cedo na manhã de segunda-feira e começamos nossa jornada para Massachusetts. Comparado com a viagem de carro para Dallas, o vôo foi uma brisa. Zuri, basicamente, comeu e dormiu todo o caminho. Assim que chegamos, os meus pais estavam esperando ansiosamente para nos encontrar. Esta foi a primeira vez que o Zuri e meus pais se encontraram ... foi uma festa e tanto. As vovos se certificaram de que tinhamos tudo o que era necessário para a nossa estadia e mais... Minha mae ela realmente tinha mais coisas para o Zuri do que eu mesma tenho em casa! Os pais do Marlon também vieram para nos ver quando chegamos e a festa continuou ...

For the two weeks we spent there we divided the time between the two sets of grandparents and we had a blast. I especially enjoyed longer naps and showers...ohh the simple pleasures of life. Zuri also had a great time. After spending barely one day at the grandparent's house he said his first word "vovo" which is Portuguese for grandma. Five months repeating mamma and dadda were overpowered by one day with the grandmas...and I thought "m" sounds were easier to make than "v" sounds...Anyways, he spent the two weeks repeating the word over and over, to his grandmas delight.

Durante as duas semanas que passamos lá, dividimos o tempo entre os dois pares de avós e aproveitamos bastante. Eu gostei principalmente da possibilidade de tirar cochilos mais longos e banhos mais demorados... ohh os prazeres simples da vida. Zuri também taproveitou bastante. Depois de passar nem um dia inteiro na casa da avo, ele disse que sua primeira palavra "vovó". Cinco meses repetindo mama e dadda foram dominados por um dia com os avós ... e eu pensei que os sons de "m"  eram mais fáceis de fazer do que os de "v" ... De qualquer forma, ele passou as duas semanas repetindo vovó, para o deleite das vovós.

While we were there, hurricane/monster storm Sandy hit the east coast. Thankfully, Massachusetts was spared and all we had was lots of rain and wind. For us, this rainy day was an added blessing since both of my parents got to stay home from work and enjoy one extra day with us. Zuri was definitely spoiled by all the attention he got...Now that we are back home he is having to re-learn the art of entertaining himself.

Enquanto estávamos lá, o furacão Sandy atingiu a costa leste. Felizmente, Massachusetts foi poupado e tudo o que tivemos foi muita chuva e vento. Para nós, este dia de chuva foi uma bênção adicional uma vez que ambos os meus pais puderam ficar em casa do trabalho e desfrutar de um dia a mais com a gente. Zuri foi definitivamente mimado de tanta atenção que ele recebeu ... Agora que estamos de volta em casa, ele está tendo que reaprender a arte de entreter-se sozinho.

Now we have been back home for a week and are trying to reestablish a routine. Zuri is eating solids three times a day and breastfeeding the rest of the time. He has been consistently taking his naps in the morning and afternoon, and sleeping in his crib. He has grown so much this last month...when we arrived I noticed he was already way past the weight limit on his bassinet so i took it down...with tears in my eyes. my oh my...he is already outgrowing things. I sat him down on the bathroom scale a few days ago and he was weighing 20 lbs!!!! (I don't know how acurate that is but it is the best I have at home). We just had to upgrade to size 4 diapers and are only 2 lbs away from having to get him a new carseat...

Agora estamos de volta em casa por uma semana, estamos tentando restabelecer uma rotina. Zuri está comendo sólidos três vezes ao dia e amamentando o resto do tempo. Ele tem sido consistentemente tirado seus cochilos da manhã e da tarde, e dormido no berço. Ele cresceu muito neste último mês ... quando chegou eu notei que ele já estava muito além do limite de peso no moises, então eu desmontei ... com lágrimas nos meus olhos. ... ele já está perdendo tantas coisas por causa do tamanho. Sentei-o na balanca de banheiro há alguns dias atras e ele estava pesando 9 kilos!! (Eu não sei quao certo esta essa balanca mas é o melhor que tenho em casa). Nós apenas tivemos que mudar para tamanho 4 das fraldas mas faltam apenas 1 kg para ele ter que usar uma caideirinha do carro nova ...

Over the last month, Zuri has gotten a lot better at balancing himself in the seating position, he rarely falls over now. He is an expert grabber, especially of my hair. He is still more excited about playing with people than toys but he has developed a special liking to a little toy car he got from tio Otavio and tia Paula (Marlon's cousin and his wife). He spends a long time looking at it, tasting it, turning it...after a while he lets it go and then picks it up again like he has never seen it before =) The babbling has also increased. He has expanded his consonant sounds to include Ts and Gs. He also tries to sing with us sometimes too (I will post a video of that sometime).

Durante o mês passado, Zuri melhorou muito na questao do equilibrio na posição de sentar, ele raramente cai agora. Ele tambem é um especialista em agarrar as coisas, especialmente meu cabelo. Ele ainda gosta mais de brincar com as pessoas do que com brinquedos, mas ele desenvolveu um gosto especial por um carrinho de brinquedo que ele ganhou de tio Otávio e tia Paula  (primo Marlon e sua esposa). Ele passa um tempao olhando para ele, experimentando, mundando de posicao ... depois de um tempo ele deixa cair e depois pega de novo, como se ele nunca tivesse visto antes =) O balbucio também aumentou. Ele amumentou o seu vocabulario de consoantes para incluir Ts e Gs. Ele também tenta cantar com a gente quando cantamos pra ele (um dia desses eu posto o video).

Month 4// 4o Mes

Despite my desire to update this blog every two weeks or so, it seems that now I only get to do about once a month. This 4th month was a very eventful one and since this has the potential to be a very extensive post, I will do my best to finish before Zuri wakes up from his nap.

Apesar do meu desejo de atualizar este blog a cada duas semanas, parece que agora eu só consigo atualiza-lo uma vez por mês. Este quarto mês foi cheio de coisas novas e uma vez que este tem o potencial para ser um post muito extenso, vou fazer o meu melhor para terminar antes Zuri acorde de sua sonequinha.

Let's see...for milestones we reached this month...Zuri is doing very well with head control and can turn from his back to his belly (both to the left and to the right). He actually enjoys tummy time a lot, which is interesting to me since it seemed like he hated it just a few weeks ago. I guess now that he can hold his head up for longer he has more fun on his tummy. He is grabbing everything...EVERYTHING. I currently have about half of my hair left and shoulders that are full of scratches. It doesn't seem to matter how short we keep his nails...somehow he manages to scratch me. He has also found his feet and reaches for them often...he has not put them in his mouth yet though. He can sit with a little support but absolutely dislikes the Bumbo seat. Every time we put him on it, he arches his back and tries to lean backwards to free his legs...it is a scary sight to me and I worry that he will hurt his neck and back so we don't leave him there for too long...I am hoping he will eventually enjoy it. The arching of the back is a new thing too...he will sometimes do it when he is on our lap...like older kids who want to crawl around or walk, except he can do neither of those yet. I am here just wondering how this is going to go when he can actually do those things.

Vamos ver ... os marcos de desenvolvimento que atingimos neste mês ... Zuri está indo muito bem controlando a cabecinha e consegue virar das costas para a barriga (tanto para a esquerda e para a direita). Ele realmente gosta muito de ficar de barriga, o que é interessante para mim pois parecia que ele odiava ficar assim a apenas algumas semanas atrás. Eu acho que agora que ele pode erguer a cabeça por mais tempo ele se diverte mais de barriga. Ele está querendo pegar em tudo ... TUDO. Eu tenho atualmente cerca de metade do meu cabelo e ombros que estão cheios de arranhões. Não importa quão curtas as unhas ... de alguma forma ele consegue me arranhar. Ele também encontrou seus pés e pega neles ...ele não os colocá na boca ainda. Ele consegue sentar-se com um pouco de apoio, mas absolutamente não gosta da cadeirinha Bumbo. Toda vez que o colocou nela, ele arqueia as costas e tenta se inclinar para trás para soltar as perninhas ... é uma visão assustadora para mim e eu me preocupo que ele vai machucar o pescoço e as costas por isso, não o deixamos lá por muito tempo ... Eu espero que ele eventualmente aprenda a gostar da cadeirinha. Essa coisa de se jogar para tras é nova também ... ele faz isso as vezes tambem quando ele está no nosso colo ... parecendo as crianças mais velhas que querem a engatinhar ou andar, exceto que ele pode fazer nenhum desses ainda. Eu estou aqui me perguntando como é que vai ser quando ele conseguir fazer essas coisas. 

This month we started teaching Zuri sign language. Since babies are able sign much before they can talk, we are hoping to avert some of the troubles and frustrations of toddlerhood by teaching him ways to communicate his needs. We have started off with 5 signs, mommy, daddy, milk, more, and dog, although we have mainly focused on the first three. He is currently not coordinated enough to repeat the signs back but he watches us very carefully when we sign and I am pretty sure he understands the sign for milk. It is actually funny when he is grumpy and we sign for milk he smiles and acts excited. We don't expect him to be able to sign back for at least another couple of months. However, once he has mastered these first 5 we will move on to more signs. 

Este mês começamos a ensinar Zuri linguagem de sinais. Ja que os bebês são capazes de fazer sinais muito antes que possam falar, estamos tentando evitar alguns dos problemas e frustrações da primeira infância, ensinando-lhe maneiras de comunicar suas necessidades. Nós começamos com 5 sinais, mamãe, papai, leite, mais, e cachorro, embora tenhamos concentrado principalmente nos três primeiros. Ele ainda não tem coordenacao motora o suficiente para repetir os sinais de volta, mas ele nos observa atentamente e eu tenho certeza que ele entende o sinal para o leite. É engraçado quando ele esta mal-humorado e nósfazemos o sinal para leite, ele sorri e age animado. Nós não esperamos que ele seja capaz de copiar os sinais por pelo menos mais uns dois meses. Mas, uma vez que ele tem dominado estes cinco primeiro vamos passar para mais outros.

So far Zuri's eyes have not changed color and his hair looks redder than ever. I had a feeling from the early days that his hair was going to curl and now I think we have confirmation. In the picture above it just looks messy, but in reality, the top longer part of his hair is full of curls. The new hair coming in is still too short to curl it seems...we'll see when it gets longer. 

Até agora os olhos Zuri não mudaram de cor e seu cabelo parece mais vermelho do que nunca. Desde os primeiros dias eu tinha uma ideia que o cabelo dele ia ficar enrolado e agora eu acho que nós temos confirmação. Na foto acima, o cabelo esta baguncado, mas na realidade, a parte de cima fica cheia de cachinhos. O cabelo novo que vem crescendo parece que ainda é muito curto para enrolar ... vamos ver quando ficar mais longo.

It is now almost 1-week since I started this post I am just now able to get back to it...and I though I was going to be able to finish it during his nap...Anyway...sooooo
This month we also took Zuri "swimming,"and by that I mean we took him to the pool and  had some purposeful activities which included submerging him a couple of times. He gets really serious when we take him in the water and doesn't move around much but he does not cry or complain. We are hoping to get him used to the pool and hopefully teaching him some water safety techniques early. He is the son of two life-guards after all.


Agora ja fazem  quase 1 semana desde que eu comecei este post eu so agora tive a oportunidade de voltar a ele ... e eu que achei que ia conseguir terminar durante a soneca do Zuri ... Enfim ...
Este mês também levamos o Zuri para "nadar", e com isso quero dizer que o levamos para a piscina e praticamos algumas atividades intencionais que incluíram submergindo-lo umas duas vezes. Ele fica todo sério quando esta na água e não se movimenta muito, mas ele não chorar nem reclamar. Nós esperamos que  ele se acostume com a agua para poder ensinar-lhe algumas técnicas de segurança cedo. Afinal de tudo, ele é o filho de dois salva-vidas.

This month we also finally started usuing the jumper we got as a baby shower gift back in April. He seems to enjoy the new found freedom it provides and when we are sitting on the floor close to him he can play on it for a good 30 minutes.

Este mês, finalmente comecamos a usar o pulador que ganhamos de presente no cha de bebe em abril. Ele parece gostar da nova liberdade que o pulador proporciona, e quando estamos sentados no chão, perto dele que ele brinca por uns bons 30 minutos.

But the most important event this month was Zuri's dedication. After a few weeks trying to coordinate schedules and postponing a few times, it finally worked out for one of the weekends and we seized the opportunity. The only thing was that the days that preceded the dedication were so hectic (we were convinced Zuri was teething), we forgot to let people know so some of our friends could not attend =(
But I have included below the video we prepared and a recording of the beautiful song performed by our friends Holly, Bong, and Dodge.


Mas o evento mais importante do mês foi a dedicação de Zuri. Depois de algumas semanas tentando coordenar os horários e adiar algumas vezes, finalmente marcamos para um dos fins de semana e aproveitamos a oportunidade. A única coisa foi que os dias que antecederam a dedicação foram tão agitadados (estávamos convencidos de que veriamos uns dentinhos no Zuri), nos esquecemos de avisar nas pessoas e alguns de nossos amigos não puderam comparecer = (
